For my admittedly non-standard hand (big hand, short but thick fingers - so I have to hold a pen quite high up) the PFM is just too short for writing unposted, which is how I write. I need at least another centimetre of length. I hate this! My PFM is the astonishing looking thing, and when dip tested the nib is pure silk.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I like using the PFM with a cap posted because it is perfectly balanced then; without the cap posted it's a little bit short bus still OK.

Yes. For me, most pens are too short if unposted.

I usually do not post when I write; however, I do have exceptions with the PFM being one. It truly is the most balanced pen whether posted or unposted. Give it a try.

I use all my pens unposted and the PFM is fine that way for me.

I too have to post my PFM and Legacy I and II pens. They are wonderful sized pens when they are posted. I post all but a select few of my pens. The ones I dont post are either Maki-e/Urushi pens or My DaniTrio Mikado/Densho because they are big pens anyways!!! I prefer large oversized pens eventhough my hands are small, I find them to be quite comfortable than smaller pens IMHO. It is all personal preference!!!

I understand the problem. I too have big hands and I've never yet found a pen that is comfortably long enough to use unposted. I used a PFM for many years (lovely pen) and I could never write with it unposted because it was too short. I mostly use a Legacy now and always write with that posted. The Legacy has a gold-plated cap that fits so seamessly that writing posted is not a problem for me - very comfortable, well balanced. I don't get the feeling that I'm using a pen with something heavy and lumpy stuck on the top of it.
The trouble with long pens (unless you go way, way upmarket) is that they tend not to be fat or wide enough for my hand. I imagine you feel the same way. believe me, a thin pen is a far worse problem than a short one.

I have found very few pens I could use comfortably unposted. I suspect this is why desk pens are long -- they would be much too short for most people without the cap posted.
I do find Parker "51"s a bit fat, though -- the 61 and Sheaffer Snorkels are perfect.
