Hi all,

I'm doing my first snorkie and I'm having troulbe with removing the point gasket.

Which way does it come out? from the center to the nib or the center to the sac?

Any tips or trick on how to remove it?

Thanks

George

George -

You will need to unscrew the nib insert from the rest of the feed. On snorks the black plastic feed has ridges on it all the way up to about 3/8" from the nib; then it's smooth plastic. That break is the seam between the nib insert and the section. The nib section and that smooth 3/8" should unscrew from the rest of the section. Once it does, the point gasket should come out easily. Sometimes it sticks to the nib, sometimes you'll have to push it out fo the section. Either way, it comes out pretty easily.

Not this one.

It tore. I have a little of it out and the rest is stuck in there.

BTW I'm taking from your message that I should push from the section to the nib to remove the stuck gasket. Correct?
KendallJ
Any chance for a photo? Do you have the nib unscrewed from the section?
KendallJ
The separated section and nib shoudl look like this:

The gasket should just be sitting in there. It is compressed when you screw the two sections back together.

If the gasket is stuck in the section, a pair of forceps or tweezers should be able to work it out, or you can pushing something through the hole as if toward the nib direction to push out the gasket.

If the gasket is stuck in the nib, I think only the tweezers/foreceps method will work. You want to be careful about using any sort of pick to pry it out as you want the sealing surfaces preserved to reseat the new gasket.

Hey Kendall,

Mine just poped right out, like the touchdowns do. it took 0 effort and was don quite by accident.

I'll check it out tonight and see if the section unscrews.

That would explain alot.

Are there any snorkies out there that did not unscrew?

George are we talking about the same gasket? The "point gasket" or the o-ring for the pneumatic filler that is located in the barrel?

Touchdowns don't have point gaskets, but they have the barrel O-ring at the back end of the pen.
ggenovez
Yes we are.

I'm just saying that the nib poped out like it does on the touchdown. Yes we are talking about the point gasket.

I tried pulling out the gasket from the barrel side and when I inserted a dowel to try to remove it, the feed and nib just poped out. 0 effort.

No seam.

Looks like the feed just gets pushed out.

I take it not many where made like this?

here is a picture of the section.

I don't see any way to separate it like on yours kendall.

Thanks

George, lovely picture. Starting at the very bottom of your image, you can see a smooth part (looks like about 1/4") then a tiny ridge, followed by a number of rounded ribs going well up the section.

That first ridge - between the smooth part, and the ribbed part is the division where the nib holding part screws into the section. Please take a look at Kendall's photos of the dissassembled section, and you will see where, as the nib screws into the section, the threads dissappear, and you would get what your picture shows - the smooth part terminating in the ribbed part.

I gather that you have tried unscrewing them, if not - give it a go. Heat may be required as it may be sealed with an adhesive or shellac. I hope no one got frustrated and used superglue there.

Good luck.

Thanks Gerry,

I tried hot watter but maybe it was not hot enought. I'll try soaking it in alcohol and see it that loosens it.
KendallJ
I see what looks like a lot of dried shellac on the threads of the section, so I would be suspicous that someone may have used a sealant on the threads of the nib unit as well. If you have a hair dryer that might work too. Hot water... I think you'd want VERY hot water. You might try one of those rubber jar lid openers to give you better grip if you have one.

If it is superglued, then it will be much tougher. Maybe acetone.

Jerry is talking about the seam pointed out in the picture below. That's where the 2 parts should separate. Shouyld twist off.
