Full Version: Triumph-nib Vac-Fil desk set

This summer I bought an old Sheaffer desk set in an antique store, so I've taken some pictures to share.

The Sheaffer in its base -- note the sticker still being there.

Here it is from the side -- sorry for the blur. Is it normal for the white dot to be on the side?

Here it is with the blind cap off so you can see the plunger

Does anyone know the modelname or approximate date on this? Since it's a Vac-Fil I think it's late 1940s or early 1950s, but I'm new and may be wrong.

The nib imprint reads:
SHEAFFER'S
REG. U.S. PAT. OFFICE
MADE IN U.S.A.
14K

Barrel imprint:
W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO.
FORT MADISON,IOWA,U.S.A.
-MADE IN U.S.A.-
1050

I'm giving thought to having this one restored -- the nib looks like it'd be good for comfortable writing.

Thanks!
Keith with a capital K
Triumph pens were produced between 1942 and 1948 and are, IMHO, among the finest pens ever made. The vacuum filler puts some off but once restored these are as reliable as any and hold an immense amount of ink.

The imprint tells us an important thing...

W.A. SHEAFFER PEN CO.
FORT MADISON,IOWA,U.S.A.
-MADE IN U.S.A.-
1050

The "1050" was placed their to indicate the pen's price of $10.50 and this is how most start to identify Triumph pens. I'd call this a 1050 desk pen that probably dates to the mid to later 40's.

They are well worth restoring... I think one of my favourite pens has to be a '42 Triumph Crest that I restored myself from a cache of spare parts.

Thanks for the info, Keith; I especially appreciate the tip about the number below the barrel imprint indicating the price. An inflation calculator (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/) indicates that it cost the equivalent of about $100 in 2005 -- about like a good Pelikan or such today.

I'm thinking more and more about having this one refurbished -- it might even become my primary at-home writing instrument, because I like how it fits my hand.

Sorry to dust off the cobwebs, but I have happened to notice a new stamping on the back of the nib.

There appears to be what remains of a small four-character imprint -- the last character is "P" and the first three are mostly gone. Photos aren't cooperating with me today so I can't get a good closeup.

The imprint appears to be a stamping of small black characters, not like on a Snorkel, on the bottom of the Triumph nib right before the nib transitions into the section.

Anyone know about Triumph markings in this location?
