Full Version: Valuable flaws or mistakes ?
The Fountain Pen Network > General Pen Topics > Pen History

If my memory is correct, I recall that some stamps with famous mistakes are some of the most valuable (Such as printed upside down, or other flaws). Is there an equivalent in the Fountain Pen collecting world ?

Well, if I am not mistaken, it happened with the 1996 ALEXANDRE DUMAS LE by MONTBLANC, part of the "Writer's Series" of pens.

Apparently Montblanc produced a small number of pens with the signature (on the pen's cap) of Dumas' son (who was also named Alexandre). Something to do with a research error apparently.....All unsold pens bearing the incorrect signature were recalled, but some were still sold.

An even bigger blunder was MB and the "Rouge et Noir" and "Noir et Noir" fiasco. They were the original Boheme but had to be recalled days after release due to a copyright infringement.

They are now very valuable and it is believed only about 4000 exist, compared to the 15000 incorrect Dumas, they're quite a find. The design is also slightly different.

They tend to go for around £500 (about $1200 ?) and the price keeps rising.

The Rouge et noir was an ironic occurance considering that MB made Stipula pull one of it's lines because it had three cap bands! two thin and a thick!

So the Stipula is another pen that became a rarity.
