I am lookng at a Sheaffer Snorkel Sentinel in the Mardarin Orange color and was wondering what the going rate would be. It is in mint conditoon with a fine nib.

Any info would be greatly apprecited.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob;

In my opinion this is a $120 pen, maybe a little more for conditon. It's a funny color in that yes, it is clearly one of the odd colors but, it is fairly readily available. I don't know a pen show that I couldn't find one at. But, bigger but here, they are asking $150. Now it won't ebay for that (often -always can happen though) and it isn't as rare as that. I also see it on sites listed for more as well. So the question is how bad do you want it? The one you're looking at is it $120 or lower? - jump on it! If it's more are you willing to wait? I wasn't willing to wait. Paid $150 for my first one and $52.50 for the second. One is mint with sticker and I'd bet it was the second one.

Thanks Roger for the response. I am bidding now and was just wondring how high I should go. I am the high bid and I am at $112, with a couple hours to go. I now have a good idea. I will let you know if I win it or not.

Thanks again.

Bob, I think it is my pen, so if nothing else, bid with confidence.

I was thinking, $125 is about the price point this thing should realize, but hopefully someone will get carried away at the end.

Also, more desireable or not, I would rather a snorkel, in a rare color, to have a plastic cap, instead of a metal one, not to talk anyone out of bidding...

Geez, talk about killing my own auction.... headsmack.gif

Seems that whilst metal capped Snorks outvalue (and had higher initial price) than similar plastic capped pens, this is not the case for the "better" colors. An all Mandarin snork should outprice a metal capped version.

Figure $175-200 for nice non mint pen. Retail. Wholesale is less. Where one lives on the wholesale-retail continuum is a personal call.

Just one website's opinon ;-)

Yes, amazing values some people want on their websites! You are right of course that on a wholesale market as Ebay can be (paying full retail for some stuff lately there - so I chaff...) that prices are often lower but, you have greater trust of what is to be purchased from a website where the proprietor has a good reputation. Still, have you seen some of your prices!?!? roflmho.gif

See you in DC.

One of the great challenges at pen shows is trying to recall the website price for a given pen, when an in-person inquiry is made. I usually nail it to within 20 bucks or so. Hard to remember hundreds n' hundreds of pens.

But, i do peek in time to time so have at least some idea of my prices. Most of the pens are sort of decent. Not to0 many "HTF, Stunning, best i've seen in 18 minutes", but i try to get nice ones up there smile.gif

Good to hear you will be at Washington. Join us for dinner one night.

not to add comment of certain website prices, but in crazy vac man's defense, I think he has more overhead to cover than does someone like me. traveling to shows, restoring those pens, living expenses do add up.... oh wait, he's a doctor, what am I saying...

but hey, nice stuff on there, nice to be able to pick and choose thru a selcetion of rare and HTF colors. I got a lot of respect for the web site sellers, the HTML code alone deserves some mad props....

I got a for sale section in the works on chiltonpens.com, need to upload pictures yet... probably in a few hours, it will be ready. The godfather II is on right now, trying to intarweb and watch that at the same time.....

Bob;

You wanted it bad and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm about to bid way too much on a desk base myself. I was hopeful that $50 would do but it's going to take $150 (maybe I won't get it). Of course, this piece might not pop up for years as the odd desk bases are far fewer in number than an odd snorkel. Still at $190 I don't think you can regret a mandarin orange for that...I did get one years ago at an antique mall (sentinel or clipper) for $8 but they thought it was such an ugly color - go figure.

Aw c'mon. Possibility exists to find *any* pen in the flea market for $10 (Parker Snake, anyone?). Doesn't really impact the general auction/collector/retail trade range ;-)

Roger W.
David;

Oh, ya, the one I found years ago has no impact on what this piece is worth. I won the desk base BTW and had to pay about as much as I was absolutely willing but, the pen is sweet and a good part of $50-60 itself.

Bob, don't listen to them. You got a good pen for a price I am happy with, and from a great seller. wink.gif

you'll love the pen. I hope it brings you great enjoyment. All the pens I sell, the proceeds go to helping fund my kids' college, so figure it as an investment in the future generation of little pen collectors!

Boy, the prices of the unusual Snorkels have really climbed lately.

Three years ago I bought from a well-known retailer a full Mandarin (plastic cap Valiant) Snorkel with a broad, flexible nib. The price was $110. I thought at the time I was paying alot.

Good luck,
Don

Thanks Roger and David for your info, and your thoughts on the value of this pen.

Rick, looking forward to receiving it. I guess I did bid a bit more than I should, but I did want the pen. Once I knew you were the seller, it put me more at ease. I knew I would be getting a pen in great condition.

Thanks again.

Better Snorks and "51"'s have been popular of late, and pose challenges to find.

Probably Mandarin falls in at the start of the ascending Vermilian/Fiesta/ Peacock/Periwinkle/ Fern.

No Joke, goto a pen show with 150 tables, see 500 snorkels, see if you can find 10 total pens representing the 6 colors just cited.
