Full Version: New Pelikan M200 owner has problem gripping on threads

I recently purchased a blue marble Pelikan M200 (broad), which writes very smoothly. I think it's a gorgeous pen, love the way it writes, but have discovered that I have a rather high grip - higher than average, I guess. When i grip this pen in a natural manner (for me), my index finger rests right on the cap threads. If I'm writing for a considerable period of time, this becomes quite uncomfortable for me.

Is there a solution for this? Or are there other equally smooth-writing FPs that you FPNers could recommend that might be more suitable for a high-gripper like myself?

Thanks in advance for your expert advice.

hmmm, i was going to recommend the lamy 2000, since the barrel is uniform; shaped like a torpedo. It DOES, however, have two little metal "ears" that might dig into your fingers.

maybe the sheaffer legacy? don't own one, but, judging from the pictures, its barrel also looks pretty uniform.

You can try the Parker "51" Mark-III model (Thin Clutch ring), the Parker P50 Falcon or a gold nibbed Sheaffer Imperial TD. All are usually smooth-writing slip-cap pens with smooth sections.

I would wonder if you were not holding the pen too tightly. All of my Pelikans fit my hand the same way, but it never amounts to discomfort.

If you hold the pen so high and feel uncomfortable with the threads on the barrel then pens with snap on caps would be apt for you....... Dig in the pen world and you would definitely find a good pen without threaded caps.

Dear GNL,

I, too, grip high and my Pels are a problem for me as well - even though they are wonderful and reliable writers. I have a Lamy 2000 and do not find the "nibs" an issue since they are on the "sides" of the pen - it is also a very good and reliable pen. Recently I got an Aurora Talentum that is like a Pel 800 in size but the cap threads are a bit higher and are not as sharp and I find it to be far more comfortable - it is also a nice writer. Of course the Parker 51s and others with slip caps are an option. I have a Sheaffer Valient (the type with the triumph nib) and while it has threads they are vey small and not all that noticable.
