Hi.

My name is French and I live in Connecticut. I am somewhat new to fountain pens, but have had an affinity to roller ball pens since high school. Currently my fountain pens are a Parker Vector (from an office super store) and a Lamy Safari (from fountain pen hospital). I can't believe the difference between the two, IMHO, the Lamy is so much nicer. I've been lurking on the site and collecting information...and enjoying writing with the Safari.

Welcome aboard!

You say what you've got, and you say you've been lurking - so, what is it you want next?

And what sort of ink do you use?

Welcome to the FPNuthouse French, but of course you already know that since you've been lurking!

You know how much this will feed your addiction, don't you (or give you one if you don't have it already)?

Looking forward to seeing you around the boards.

welcome to our humble abode, French.

well, some of us are humble. Not me.

Yup, the Lamy is a great pen. The Vectors is well-made but a bit small and slippery. okay for short-term use but not long-term.

we will enable you - encouraging you to plunge into the deep end where you will find Pelikans, Parkers, Sheaffers, Namikis and even at the very deep end, Etrurias. (running from Wim).

so many pens - so little time.

and money.

and never enough ink. smile.gif

look forward to reading more from you.

Hi French,

Welcome to our nutty little shelter, the gathering place of mostly pleasantly disturbed men and women with a similar affliction: the love for fountain pens. biggrin.gif

And if you manage to get here, you'll have to remember that it is a habit that won't go away anymore, ever biggrin.gif.

Personally, I reckon the Safari is a much better pen than the Vector, and it is a great starter pen too. So, good choice there. They are slightly dryish writers, so make sure you choose inks that go well with it, like Waterman or soem of the less dense Noodler's.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your travels along the board, together with us!

Warm regards, Wim

The abode may be humble, but you didn't say anything about us anyway laugh.gif.

Well, running away isn't going to help you biggrin.gif, and furthermore, in order to get that little extra, you have to work harder to get it, or in this case, dive a little deeper laugh.gif.

Warm regards, Wim (admiring his latest little addition in the mean time tongue.gif)

Welcome to FPN French...

I am exceedingly fond of my (stainless) Vector which was the first real pen I ever bought some... lemme think... 23 years ago.

The smaller and slippery aspect was cured by slipping the rubber grip from a rather useless uni-ball gel pen over the barrel some years ago. This solution works for folks like me who grip their pen higher and now the pen is good for marathon writing sessions.

The Lamy Safari is an absolutely superb pen and is often tops the "what is the best first pen?" lists.

Cheers!
Maja
Hi French,
Welcome to FPN! biggrin.gif

I too own both a Parker Vector and a Lamy Safari. Both are very good starter fountain pens. My Lamy has an italic nib and the Vector doesn't, so it's a bit difficult to compare the two in terms of a writing experience, but both are reliable pens and durable, to boot. Certainly, the Safari is more eye-catching and daring in terms of design!

Hello French and welcome to the FPN! Many of my friends in Germany will agree with you about Lamy and their fine products they manufacture. I myself, find their pens a little too modernistic, and prefer Pelikan over Lamy hands down. However, this is the really good this about collecting pens, is that everyone has their own tastes and preferences when it comes to style and design. smile.gif

my experience with the Vector calligraphy nibs was positive. Not as sharp as Osmiroids but quite smooth. I don't regret my years of enjoying these pens, i just had to move on to larger ones in time. Not much larger but...

Welcome aboard. I really like your first name biggrin.gif

Thanks for the replies everyone. I feel so welcome.

someone asked what ink I write with. Currently I'm using Noodler's eternal black ink. I like it, and it is permanent on paper.

Someone else asked what pens I want. I'm thinking a Pelikan M-200 would be a nice next pen, or maybe a vintage Parker.
