Full Version: New Sheaffer Victorian Special Edition

Thought everyone would like a sneak preview of the new Sheaffer Legacy Heritage Victorian Series Special Edition.

It will be a deeply engraved all sterling silver pen with a repeating Victorian era motif. The pen is based on the classic Sheaffer Legacy Heritage Sterling Silver, so it will be a heavyweight and handsome pen.

The series will be an unnumbered Special Edition fountain pen and rollerball pen and will be released in October or November, 2005. The fountain pen will retail for US $450.00.

Sheaffer is asking their dealer base to estimate the number of pens they want and that will be the run. Once the pre-orders are in and the dealers get their stock, that will be it for this model.

We will have the early production pens in mid August and will give a full review.

You can read more about this pen and the other new pens in the Sheaffer fall lineup here:

Sheaffer has told us that they want all dealer reservations in by Monday, August 1.

You should let your Sheaffer dealer know right away if you want one of these pens.

Cheers,

What type of filling mechanism will it have? For $450 I would hope it's more than a Converter.

It's actually a cartridge / converter pen, same as the other Legacy Heritage models. The reason for the price difference is the intricate engraving and the limited supply. There will probably be only about 500 made.

That's possible, of course, but I very seriously doubt it for a number of specific reasons.

First, the factory in Fort Madison is closing in 2006, so they will be moving production. They won't be in a position to keep making the pens there, even if they wanted to. A second or later run would be very difficult logistically in the midst of moving the factory.

Second, while I agree that an unnumbered edition implies an open ended run, and that individually numbering pens is an expensive extra step that would increase the cost and the price, and I don't think Sheaffer is that interested in creating a limited edition. I do think this is a single run and see this model as the Fort Madison last hurrah.

Third, let's look at how they approached their dealers. Earlier this year, they asked us what we thought of the proposed pen and how many we thought we could sell. They were specific going in that it would not be a numbered limited, but would be made to the demand dealers gave them. They came back later in the summer and said, they were going to make 500 or up to as many as their dealers reserved. They closed reservations August 1 and told us clearly that the number was fixed.

Sheaffer typically only makes 1,000 of their regular sterling silver pens every year. They actually ran out on us in 2004 and had to make more to keep up with orders. But if Sheaffer only makes and sells about 1,000 regular sterling silver pens in a year, why would I think a special edition that's more expensive would sell more? They may have wondered if 500 was the right number.

Lastly, practically, I would guess that the set up on this particular pen is expensive, so Sheaffer had to decide how many blanks they want to make and then run them all at once to keep the cost where they want it. I also do not believe that Sheaffer has the complicated engraving machine necessary to do the work required on this pen. It's possible, but I doubt it. They job some of their finishes now, including the Look of Leather and Rainbow finishes.

So my thinking is that they would need a really big demand to make more, like 200-300 more pens. I don't think it will happen. I intend to find out how many were actually ordered and can say that ours was one of the largest.

Hi Jim,

speaking of the swan song of Fort Madison, I was browsing your PenInHand section and did not find a part II to "Trip to Mecca"...

Denis,

You missed it because it's not there yet. sad.gif

I've been playing catch up - it and the 3rd and 4th parts will be posted over the next few weeks.

I wish Bic had shown a little more imagination with this one. The packaging (if that's the final version) could at least have a distinctive covering - at least a STICKER, for crying out loud. And I think numbering would have been a good idea, too. Bic does not seem to want to play the LE game, but this one might be a good time to test the waters, especially since this is the FM swan song. (I HATE saying that.)

That said, I like it. The design is (correct me if I'm wrong!) is a totally new one for Sheaffer, not a retread, so that's very welcome. It's pretty distinctive, too - kind of reminds me of the kind of stuff Yard-O-Led does.

Dear Nick,

Yes - it's a new design. I have the prototype and it's very nice. I was surprise to see it in palladium furniture, but it works for me. Check the photo out in the other listing.
