I recently picked up one of these 1997 Special Editions with a broad nib. It's a lovely pen, spoiled only by persistent skipping. It's been back to Sheaffer twice so far and there's been some improvement, but it will still only write without skipping on certain papers. With a loupe there's nothing obviously amiss with the nib.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the nib might not be ground properly? I would send it to Richard Binder, this man is one the best "nibmeisters" around, and has done miracles on many pens, some of which he can reserect even after a severe accident. Check out his Web site:
