Greetings and Welcome, Johan

Always room for another Dutchman in here. smile.gif

In spite of Wim's unusual taste in ink colors for the boardroom, he has set a high standard here for Dutchmen to emulate. After a while, you may think of yourself as "The Mad Dutchman", also, at which time Wim will become "The mad, mad Dutchman! laugh.gif

Seriously, I know you'll enjoy the FPNuthouse.

Hi Johan,

As Roger said: there is always room for another Dutchman on the board biggrin.gif.
Welcome to this mad house for fountain pen nuts!

A goodday, or as John Kerry would say: Bonjour!
I've been a member since yesterday, and I have found some time to introduce myself.
Like some other members (Wim from Maastricht; he's from the Deep South!) I'm from The Netherlands.
Where are you from/do you live, if I may ask?

I learned to write in school with a fountain pen, but this good
habit fell in disuse when I was in my teens. During my years as a university student I used to write with Parker ballpoints and rollerballs. Only after I finished my studies I re-discovered the enormous pleasure of writing with a FP!
Very similar, but still continued to use fountain pens in the first few years of my varsity years.

My mom-in-law is a teacher, and she gave my girlfriend a Lamy. I don't know the type; it is a schoolpen with a wooden body. It looks very simple, but writes well.
Ha, a Lamy ABC! You can still get them, at most stationery stores in the NL.

Last January I gave my girlfriend a Shaeffer Javelin FP. I have spend months choosing a fountain pen for myself. I went to a shop with two options; 1- Waterman Phileas 2- Parker Frontier. I didn't buy either, because the Frontier will be removed from the collection soon, and the shop-owner thought of the Phileas as a disastrous pen. So I bought myself a beautiful Waterman Hemisphere, medium nib, stainless steel. I use a converter and black Waterman ink. Soon after this first purchase, I bought a cheap Parker Jotter stainless steel fp, to use at my work. Three weeks later I bought a new old stock Parker 45 fp (with a matching ballpoint). This pen I currently use for writing at my job. I found out that my boss (well, he is a unitmanager) writes with a Waterman Carene fp. Well  at
least two fp users amid all these disposable ballpoints and Jotters!
Well, all good choices, AFAIAC! The Carčne apparently is very popular in the NL, because it is not very sensitive to the way you hold it. It will write under almost any angle, it seems.

Yesterday I became very interested in buying a Wality 69L fp; I love the classic design and it's technical simplicity. I read the review's on this website, and all users seem to have a good time with this pen!

That's all for now,

Best,

Johan
Thank you for sharing this intro with us, here, Johan, and enjoy your stay here!

Warm regards, Wim

Hi Johan and Welcome to the FPN!

My ancestry comes from The Netherlands, around the Hilversum area, but emigrated to the New York area in the late 1600s. Someday, I want to go over and see your country in person, especially when it's tulip time. This time of the year is ideal for taking photos.

How are the pen stores in Amsterdam? Are students still required to use fountain pens in schools in The Netherlands? I know in Germany they are, where Lamay and Pelikan are the preferred choices.

Welcome, Johan.

I just noted that the discussion of the ABC was resurrected recently (i think in the Fountain Pen forum?) so many of us have seen a picture of it. Looks like a cool little pen.

Wonder why the shopkeeper didn't think well of the Phileas. Here it is probably the pen most recommended as a "starter" pen. Ah well, someone once told me that a Pelikan M200 was worthless and anything less than an M600 was a waste of money. to each their own?

anyway - welcome, look forward to more posts from you though it's getting a little scary as to the number of Dutch and Canadian members here. smile.gif

Hi KCat,

Just for your information: the Phileas is rather expensive over here, about 45 euros or so. And a Kultur is less than half of that. Also, the fine nibs of the Phileas, when not treated well, do occasionally get out of kilter by too much pressure. It is a pen offten bought by long time bp users who want something a little better, so that happens reasonably easily.

Of course, they're probably better off with a Carčne, but that is 4X as expensive...

Warm regards, Wim
