Hi

My vintage MB149 and my vintage MB146 satisfy me more than a lot that I planned to purchase a modern 149 and a modern 146 next week end.
My 149 is a wonderful daily writer and the 146 is a wonderful writer as well. I am not into limited editions but if everything goes well then I will buy some limited editions as well.

I've always had an attraction to the 146. Almost bought one the other day, but I really can't part with the dollars at the moment. Please post pics and a review -- at least I'll be able to get some vicarious satisfaction!

Georges--

I think if you select carefully, you will be happy with a MB LE. The two I've acquired write very nice and are both very distinctive (Fitzgerald and Kafka). But, you may be a little disappointed in comparison with your vintage 146 and 149. While I think that modern MB pens are very good pens and generally reasonably priced, I do not know if many pens, modern or vintage, can compare to their best, from early days into the 1950s.

But enjoy and be sure to report back to us!

Hi Dan

I have tried some weeks ago a modern 146 and a modern 149 (by modern I mean a pen from the 80's) , I wasn't disappointed. My 1965 146 is one of my smoothest pens it has flexible medium broad nib and my 1979 149 has a semi flexible nib. I think the only prob is perhaps the prone to facture resin but anyway pens are not made to be thrown on the floor. The modern 146 and 149, I tried were buttery smooth. The kafka is not my cup of tea but I like the fitz more. The 146 and 149 are sober, elegant and have a strenght of character. It is very rare that I buy pens with vivid colors, I prefer dark colored or black pens in general. The 146 and 149 are enough reliable pens that have nothing to envy to other fine pens.
Don't worry I will keep you informed

I note your liking for the more conservative pieces in pen design; have you considered the Poe ? The deep blue celluloid is very striking in person and as a recent review showed here recently, the trim is second to none.

The problem is the price of the poe which is 600€ in second hand condition for that price I can buy a near mint second hand MB 149 for 340€ and a near mint MB 146 in second hand for 240€. I will rather buy two pens for the price of one. My next pen is either gona be a waterman le man 100 or a m1000. I don't exclude the MB limited editions but that will not be for this year.

I am also looking for a 149 now... where to you plan on buying yours? I went to a dealer in New York City (Joon Pens) and their price is $496 + tax (this is for a new one).

Thanks

At Mora Stylos, the best penshop of Paris, the pens I will buy are in second hand near mint condition plus I always had bargain prices on pens.

That is a good price. I also live in NYC and I am going to Altman Luggage on Sunday to see how much it would cost for a MB 146 (Gold trim) and maybe if the price is right I get an MB149.
