I won an English rolled gold 45 on ebay a couple of weeks ago. The cap and barrel were in good shape, only a minor ding on the cap. But the end of the barrel was damaged; the tail missing in fact! Here's the auction picture....

So I took a piece of this:

Then had a little fun with the lathe, and ended up with this. The length and taper are correct:

Here's the same pen with a new tail attached. Susan Wirth had a gold 45 with a red section at the Boston show, which I thought looked rather pretty. Since the original was puckered, I pulled a new one out of stock and installed it in the pen. It's one sweet writer!

Nice Ron, i saw a red and gold one recently but missed ot on it dry.gif Listen that tail bit you put in the end there nice piece of work. I have a few 45 flighters, inc, the one with the gold end, s/s end and the black. Now when i'm unscrewing the barrel on that one i have to grip the tail because the stainless steel on the barrel is a sleeve which just turns, strange though seems yours is just an add on piece?? unsure.gif

I understand that there were a couple of ways that these were attached to the barrel. I have seen some where the barrel liner has come loose like the one you describe.

You could see where this one had snapped off. It's secured with a modified screw from the inside, with the tail threaded to accept the screw, and the whole thing epoxied together.
