Full Version: FPN Board software upgrade, part deux

FPN Admin Team
Dear people of FPN,

As you can see the board software has been upgraded already. A little earlier than planned, but this way could be done without interruption, as we found out late last night board time smile.gif. So no withdrawal symptoms for anybody.

However - isn't there always a but or however smile.gif - , it does mean that all the extar features that we built into the site, extra buttons and the like, are not available yet.

We will be working on these over the next days, possibly weeks, depending on the ease with which the adaptations can be made.

I hope you can bear with us while this happens.

Warm regards,

The FPN Admin Team

The upgrade is looking good. I can only wait with bated breath for the return of the dancing bunny. smile.gif

Very nice this upgrade!! I like it!!
I saw that our space is now reduced to 5Mb!! I have removed my attachments and put them in my webspace. So I don't use anymore fpn space for pics.
maryannemoll
Not done yet? It already looks so good to me! And is it really going a wee bit faster, or is the more modern look making me imagine faster speed? smile.gif

Thanks, Admin! smile.gif

Anyway, I've already used the mutiple posts quote feature. It's nice. It''s great that the upgrade went/is going so smooth. smile.gif

Congratulations on a very smooth upgrade! It looks good, works smoothly and seems even faster than the last version.
Momomar
Many thanks to a superb admin staff. This makes me want to DONATE! Sort of like paying dues...

Thanks for the smooth upgrade; I thought the board would be down for a whole day or two, so this was a nice surprise smile.gif

Now, we just need all our smilies back so I can communicate properly... laugh.gif

How do you do that? I don't see a button for it. I've been opening a copy of the thread in a separate tab and pasting quotes back into my reply. Is there a faster way? unsure.gif

I really like the new software you are using! Its fresh and new (hmmm...I can almost SMELL the newness!) and it seems easier to use than the last. Its also more customizable as with the last software, I couldn't figure out how to change my time zone! Anyways, good job!

Hi Viseguy,

Just mark the posts to be quoted with the +Quote button, which then becomes a red -Quote, continue doing that for all the posts you want to quote, and on the last one click Reply. or mark them all this way and click Add reply when done.

That's it - easy.

Oh, and when you decide you don't need to quote one after all, just click on the red -Quote, and it will become a blue +Quote again.

Hi Evan,

You can find this option in My Controls (at the top right of the page):

Menu - Options - Board Settings - Your base time zone.

The Menu is on the left hand side in My Controls, scroll to Options, then click Board Settings, and time zone is the first option on the page..

HTH, warm regards, Wim

great job on the upgrade. the array of new options is fantastic and i think it makes the board a lot more user friendly. there are so many little things to discover now-its like a treasure hunt!

Yes, the upgrade is nice. I recognise the features from another forum I'm a member on.

I notice the current skin does not scale correctly in the banner section. The Search and Help buttons are of the screen at the right.

Also I uploaded the image below depicting the problem and I noticed the image is a 80kb jpg image on my harddrive while after uploading the board tells me I have used 1.96mb !?

Hmm... where'd the advanced search go? (options such as "display results as posts/threads," "search entire post/titles only" are gone.

But, I like several of the new options, including having the thread name included in the page title and the fastreply.

you have to go down two levels of options and then more options to get to the advanced search.

The upgrade adds a lot of value, for sure. On the downside, the board does not display properly in Firefox v2. The graphics in the FPN masthead are stacked one on top of the other, instead of displaying in a single line. Worse than that, the "Assistant" feature is unusable. The graphic portions take up the entire window, while the text and links are scrolled all the way to the right, out of reach. It's a problem. These problems do not occur with Internet Explorer, but I would hate to have to resort to IE for reading and posting to FPN!

I'm running FireFox v. 2.0.0.3 on WinXP Pro SP2 with all the latest Windows updates doodads, and everything seems to be rendering fine for me. Graphics are displaying fine, and nothing seems piled up to me on the main board or in the assistant window. Just another datum.

Strange. That's exactly what I'm running: FireFox v. 2.0.0.3, WinXP Pro SP2 with all updates. We may have different screen resolutions -- mine is 1024x768 -- but I find it hard to believe that this could be a factor. Video card? Mine is an ATI Radeon X300 SE X300SE [320-3934] 128MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out). Mainstream stuff. Again, hard to believe it could be a factor. unsure.gif

Yup, we have a bunch of kinks to work out.
wimg
There will be some kinks, which we will try to fix as the schedule allows. It proves to be a lot of work, unfortunately. OTOH, at least the board wasn't down very long during the upgrade.

In the mean time, if anybody encounters a specific problem, we would appreciate it if you would post this in the Community Feedback forum, in the topic created there for this purpose.

Please try to describe the problem as succinctly as possible, and add a screendump, or even a few, if it clarifies the situation any further. It makes it easier to find any problems and try to fix them.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Warm regards, Wim

Well, it depends on where you're coming from I guess.

Think of it as a possible selection, not as a status.

When you see any post - that tab is always indicating + QUOTE. Doesn't mean that you've selected to quote it - it means click here to QUOTE. Naturally, when you've selected to QUOTE a post, there's no point in selecting it again, and the indicator flips to - QUOTE to show where you click to unselect the QUOTE function.

That seem more intuitive?

Gerry

Well... not really. But thanks for trying! smile.gif To me, it would make more sense to omit the plus and minus signs, and simply have the button toggle colors when clicked. But no matter. The important thing is that I now know how it works! Thanks to lisa, Wim and you, Gerry, for the pointers and explanations. biggrin.gif

Actually, it was only an apparent problem. The display gets out of whack only when I enlarge the text size (Ctrl+<+>) past a certain point. If I decrease the text size (Ctrl+<->), everything looks fine, including the Assistant window. I should have experimented a little before complaining. Hope I didn't send anyone on a wild goose chase!

You've probably noticed this already, but in threads that are broken up into multiple pages, the navigation buttons for the pages appear under the first message on each page, rather than at the top of the page.

Never mind. I just realized I was using the "Linear +" view. When I switched back to Standard view, things went back to normal. smile.gif

The current setting is that the cookie for logging in here expires after 7 days, from the pc or mac you are using at that moment. I guess we could make that longer, but we'll have to discuss that first. Essentially, the new board software has heightened security measures, to prevent spammers and hackers as much as possible from doing their dastardly deeds, but unfortunately it also has an effect on legitimate users here.

I'm sure this is a stupid question - you don't have your system set to automatically clear cookies, right? some people do that. I don't. I guess though that this would only be cleared at shut-down.

Could it be that our sessions are now being tied to our IP addresses? I am on dialup with a dynamically assigned IP address, and I seem to be prompted to log in again whenever I have made a new connection to my ISP.

Well, that particular option is actually switched off, so either it is faulty, or doesn't work too well, considering some of the reactions I have had from people.

You may have to clear your browser caches and everything (history, temp files, cookies) in order for it to work the way it should, but it was switched off about 1 day after the software update (yes, there is such an option smile.gif ).

If it persists after clearing, there may be one other thing we can do, but I am afraid it won't help a lot. We can force a reset of your cookie from inside the board, if need be. But please clear everything in your browser first, if you don't mind, and let us know if it has helped or not.

I'll contact IPB about this as well.

Warm regards, Wim

Wim,

After deleting all the FPN cookies I have changed my IP address a couple of times and I didn't get prompted to log in again. So either that wasn't the problem, or clearing the cookies fixed it!

No I don't have my system set up to dump cookies automatically. I am not having the same problems on any of the other forums. It turns out that it didn't even work for me! This evening I have been prompted to log in twice -- apparently it is more random than I thought.

This time I watched the HTTP headers, and it seems that the server is (sometimes) resetting my "member_id" and "pass_hash" cookies to "0" in response to a request for the "/forum" URL. I have saved a copy of the request and response headers if they would be of any use to the admins in working out what is going on.

Log in problem hasn't gone away, but I need the typing practice, so I'll just deal with it.

Kcat, I have been meaning to email you, the Estie desk pen is great! I have used it daily, with no problems. It is amazing how smooth some of these old pens are. I also looked through my parts bin, and found a near-mint taper to replace the scored one. Thanks again.

Why are my pictures being resized? I save all of my pictures 800 max x 640 max, but I am now finding them shrinked down 80%!! FPN isn't hosting my pictures, Photobucket is, so I'm not using up any FPN resources with 800 wide pics-can somebody throw me a bone here?

That is a little weird, as the settings are about 1024 X 768 currently. I'll check again.

BTW, this automatic resizing with the option to still see the full image is a new feature in the current version of the board software.
