Fit the First

It all started with the thought that a Esterbrook 444 Dipless Desk pen could do with some sprucing up. Initially the thought was to reproduce the entire pen in some acrylic material but upon some thought the term spurcing led to possible some wood, bog oak to be exact maybe some 6,000 year old wood from the Hill of Tara the historic seat of Ireland's royality.

Project in trouble already ohmy.gif
Barrel and tail arrived safely today but:

the Hill of Tara the historic seat of Scottland's royality

If a Scotsman ever tried to be High King of Ireland he'd have had his kilt shoved up his .... blink.gif

Workshop getting tidier as retirement approaches. Lathes back spotless. Tools honed and racked.
Luckily I had a pair of hand screw-chasers the right thread (32tpi).

Hopefully we will experiment with
Bog Oak qv
Antler (Irish Red Deer from Phoenix Park)
African Blackwood
Synthetic Mother of Pearl
and a selection of hardwoods.
Could be fun.

Mea culpa, mea culpa the geographic inconsistency has been corrected wink.gif

OK Game On rolleyes.gif

BTW - this is my way of warming up for the pens biggrin.gif

Pic 1 is a lump of Bambi ohmy.gif don't worry, they shed their antlers, I didn't have to kill him

Cut and chucked for initial turning.
Lathe is a very home-modified Record No4, variable speed, 1HP and you can genuinely balance a coin on it's edge on the headstock when it's running full tilt biggrin.gif
My Sweet Baby wub.gif
Chuck is an Axminster Super Precision with O'Donnell jaws (STOP YAWNING at the back!).
Just behind you can see the original tail piece resting on the Lapis Lazuli blanks for something else rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif
Ruaidhri
Piece reversed into chuck (Precision 3-Jaw) for threading.

Oddly enough the thread struck and the barrel fits.
Arrowed is the 32tpi outside hand chaser used for the thread.
Ruaidhri
So this is where we are now - next is shaping the tail - maybe flutes or similar along it ?
Ruaidhri
BTW - the tools:

Here are pics of the chasers. The 32 tpi inside and outside beside 8tpi versions - very hard to make out the teeth on the 32.
Second pic is of armrest with chaser & cig packet for scale smile.gif
Armrest goes under arm, rests across tool rest and gives more flexibility & control. Very popular in the 1800s biggrin.gif

Kurt - need some input - I'll mock up an idea of it with the flutes tomorrow & see what you think.

Wow That really looks neat. The only thing that might be nice is something rings neat the threads and then something at the top. Maybe like the bishop on this chess set

Should warn you - this won't be terribly fast. I don't 'do' lasers & such, this is the old fashioned way - by hand wink.gif
Texturing examples
Spirals
Just some food for thought smile.gif

a center section that is either spiral or textured would be great and then go to a straight section at the screw point as well the finial?

What about instead of doing just the tail do the whole thing so that the nib screws into the piece?

Must have a look at that smile.gif

Not sure that finial works. Perhaps a tweak in colour & size sad.gif

This coming week will be a bit frenetic so bear with me smile.gif

The finial was a bugger to even get to a reasonable relative size in GIMP, I wasn't going to mess around with recoloring it laugh.gif

just going for the overall look with it straight then spiral then straight again.

Not sure how bone would work with the spiral but maybe a denser material might work.

Just moved this thread out to the turning section as it really is appropriate here.

Thanks Kurt.

As you are aware family probs. have thrown a major spanner in the works, but work should resume next week DV.

Ruaidhrí

On a technical note - the tail has a straightforward 32tpi single start thread and was chased using the hand chasers shown, rather than bother setting up a gear train on the Myford.

Ruaidhri,

Any chance of know what the blanks are for?

Looks to be an interesting project I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Sorry, this has absolutely nothing to do with this thread so feel free to delete it - I just saw the thread title it and it piqued my interest - but I feel compelled to post with reference to the above quote of several months ago...

Did you know that the very last High King of Ireland was Edward Bruce, Earl of Carrick, Prince of Scotland and brother of King Robert the Bruce of Scotland? Robert the Bruce was keen to open a second front against the English and sent over his famed brother, a skilled guerilla fighter and key commander of Bannockburn, to help the Irish. He eventually became Kind of Ireland.

Here endeth the lesson of history. smile.gif You can read more if interested of course http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bruce
