My fountain pen inventory database is ready to download. There is a version for both Mac and PC users. The database maintains a lot of useful information about your fountain pen collection, including basic descriptive info, prices paid, repairs made and unlimited photographs. It also makes it very easy to post reviews to FPN. This database isn't associated with FPN, but I did add a couple of features that plays nicely with FPN.
As I mentioned, there's a Mac and a PC version. I ran into some font issues on the PC and had to make a a couple of small changes to the PC version in order to get it posted without delay. There isn't a large difference, but the Mac version looks a little nicer.
When you download it and unzip it, you will see a file and a folder named Fountain Pen Inventory. The file is an alias to the main program file in the folder. I don't usually distribute my solutions as standalone runtime databases. I've tested it as carefully as I could, but let me know if you have any issues. Even better, let me know if you like it, too. There is no charge for Fountain Pen Inventory. It's my gift to the FPN fountain pen community. You can redistribute it to someone else, but are not allowed to charge for it, modify it or present it as your own work.
Enough of the intro, you can download it at:

I downloaded it. Thanks!
I've always liked FileMakerPro. I keep meaning to get a copy and start using it. I just haven't had much need for a database.

Wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just imported my existing database from Excel, and this is a much more intuitive way of keeping the info up to date.
very nice!

Nope. It's a standalone application created with the developer's version of FMP.

Thanks, Jean Elie! I'm glad that you and everyone else here are enjoying FPI. You can sort the database on any field or combination of fields. Select Sort from the Fountain Pen menu or type Cmd-S. You can select sort fields from that dialog. The field named "Sold_To" is the one you are looking for.

Ink support is already planned for the next release. I'd be interested to hear what information about your inks that you would like to track.

There are some serious inkophiles here so why don't you start a discussion in Inky Thoughts to get some of them involved.

I'm having fun

entering all the data from my Excel file. A few suggestions for the next version:
1. Have an entry for filling mechanism
2. Ability to sum up the prices.
Thanks again!

Are you mad, woman?!

If you do implement this, jonro, please make sure that it's well safe-guarded with biometric IDs or something like that. If my wife knew that total I'd be dead for sure!

There is an entry for filling mechanism on the Review page, but I will add a small entry field for filler on the main page. About summing up the prices, are you sure you want to know?

Thanks very much for sharing this!
A couple of things I have found. The program is not happy running with the full version of Filemaker running at the same time (I'm on a Mac). I have been trying to figure out how to get the pix from my current filemaker database into this one without exporting/importing each and every image, but I'm not having any luck so far. I'm a very basic user of Filemaker, and the scripts and tabs you have created make for a much nicer database than the one I made for myself, based off of a provided inventory template.
Very very nice of you to share this. I appreciate it!

No.

But in my Excel file I
could get a total if I want to. I think I did that once. When I came to I promptly forgot the figure. Just figured it could be useful if someone does want it.

Thank you so much for your efforts and your generosity. It is truly appreciated.
I've been on an organizing kick, which is amazing as I am congenitally impaired in the organizing department. This could be the start of something amazing.
Now, the next step is the sheet music. YIKES!!! That's TWENTY FIVE SHELF FEET OF SHEET MUSIC(!!!) in the standing up position, like books are shelved. And some, well most, of it is 10 pages or less, per piece.
OY!

Elizabeth,
Have you ever looked at Levenger's Circa notebooks and organization tools? Like Tivo, they have changed my life (for the better). If you're not familiar with them, they are like a next generation spiral notebook or ring binder. The pages can slip in and out into different sections without opening a binder. The notebooks also lay flat like a spiral notebook. Very cool system.

Mea culpa for forgetting that much of the world does not use real money. Just kidding. I'll see what I can do.

Apr 11 2007, 05:49 PM
Would you want the currency preference by item or for the entire database?
Michael R.
Apr 11 2007, 06:02 PM
...if you are talking about "real" money I think US $, Euros and GBP would be fine to me (..other may object) - at least these are the currencies I use to buy my pens with (living in Germany but also getting some deals from overseas) = currency preference by item would be great.
Otherwise as stated "great work".
Cheers
Michael

This is a VERY nice application. Thank you very much, Jon.
Only been playing with it for a couple minutes. Love that it offers what to fill in in the Manufacture and Model.
Comment:
--- At the end of the User Guide it sounds like there is more. It ends without a "." period. I tried to copy it to show you but that didn't work. said there were a few things to explain, mentioned "first and last" and ended. I have a PC running XP.
Off to fill in a few more pens. This is almost as much fun as buying them, waiting for the mail person to deliver.
Not certain I want the $ total feature others mention. Ignorance maybe be bliss in this situation.
Again, Thank you, Jon for this offering.

Thanks so much for this great application Jon! I've been a computer professional for 27 years and even worked for Big Blue for a decade. As a commercial software application specialist I've seen db's of every sort--good and bad. Yours is, by far, the most user friendly I've experienced. You are a great asset to this community.
Again, THANK YOU!
Best regards,
Jerry
P.S. Perhaps the collection total, etc., could be on a collection summary page that would give total value, number of pens per manufacturer, and total for each manufacturers collection. Sorry, I didn't mean to create more work for you.
