My first pen crisis ever. My recently-acquired "51" fell on the floor. When I picked it up and took the cap off to write the hood that covers the nib is jarred into the cap.
So I'm looking at : cap with the hood stuck in it, and the nib/collector/rest of the pen.
How do I extricate the hood from the inside of the cap???
BTW: just two days ago I posted here that I wanted to learn more about repairs. I wasn't expecting to need a repair while in a business suit at work!!
I already tried grabbing it with tweezers but that's not working.
Thanks in advance

Let me see if I have this right...
The pen dropped and when you took the cap off the hood came off the collector and feed and is stuck in the cap.
I have never seen that happen. Generally what happens if the cap locks down on the clutch ring and gets stuck.
Did you unscrew the cap to get it off the pen or did you pull it off...
If you unscrewed the cap, try screwing back on so the hood screws back onto the body and pulling the cap....

Griz has the best solution there.
I might add to screw the barrel back in and place the cap into some hot water to heat it up. Do not allow the hot water to flood into the cap though, you might damage the plastic.
The idea being that you might be able to heat the cap up enough that it would let go of the hood/section assembly. You can then yank the whole barrel section hood of the pen out.
Good luck.

I'm affraid you have that correct.
I tried that. And (just) now inspired by your direction I gave it a forceful yank and it came out. I didn't pull in it with much force the 1st time, fearing I'd snap it.
So now I have the end hood in place and cap where it should be. Except now there's some play in the nib/hood. I can rotate the nib in the hood by moving the silver mechanism holding the sac and feed. Screwing on the back plastic cover too much results in the same movement of the nib under the hood. I wonder if I stripped the threads.
Thoughts?

You might have stripped the threads, but it might just be an adjustment needs to be made to the alignment of the nib and collector. Basically you need to screw the hood on to where it is tight, mark that spot with something, and remove the hood. Align the nib and collector a bit past the marked spot and shellak the hood threads and screw it back down.
Takes a bit of practice, but you will get it fixed.

Thank you both. I can see what you mean by aligning it. I have it there now--I think- but can see where screwing the back in too tighly might be a problem.
Thankfully it writes.
Now one more question. The clip is a bit loose. I think it's the bushing (if I have my anatomy correct) and was planning to reasearch that issue tonight. Could that have played a role in the hood getting stuck up inside the cap. Maybe it got snagged on the bushing?
