This is kind of a silly question (maybe): but has anyone ever heard of a problem with Hero 100's of not being to able unscrew the body to get to the ink sac? I don't know how in the world this thing got so cinched down, but I can't get it unscrewed. Since it's just plastic I can't work at it too hard. Would WD40 work? Any idea's? I just got the pen 4 days ago :-(

thanks in advance,
Dave

Hi Dave,

No guarantee on this but you could dunk it in water at about 120 degrees F for a couple of seconds, the idea being that the outer plastic will possibly expand more quickly that the innner section threads and so loosen the grip.

You could roll it up and down between the palms of your hands for a minute or two, I have no idea why but this does sometimes work on stuck plastic barrels, it worked on a Parker 17 once and on a couple of others.

A couple of pieces of rubber sheet or cut tube to give you a better grip might help but be careful, I have no idea how strong the plastic is on Hero 100s.

WD40 whilst useful for some things isn't a good thing with most pens, whilst it is mostly a silicone lubricant it does have petroleum distillates in it that are not good for some plastics, just a word of caution not a 'Don't do it at any price' prohibition, after all it is your pen, besides not only will it make the joint slippery it will also make your hands slippery. smile.gif

Sorry not to have any better ideas, best of luck,
Cheers, John

Occasionally these get the barrel shellaced on when the hood is installed, as it must be sealed. Makes it somwhat difficult to remove the barrel, eh?

Dip it in very hot water for a few minutes, or heat GENTLY with a hair dryer or hot air popcorn popper. Shellac melts at about 140 F, so just too hot to hold comfortably is just about right.

I would suspect that there isn't much shellac in the barrel threads, it's just a trace that oozed over from sealing the hood. Once good a warm, it should come off with finger pressure.

DO NOT overheat it, at some point the plastic will soften, and I don't know what the plastic is (I'd guess polystyrene), and you won't be happy if you squash the pen.

If the hood also unsrews, just seal it back down with a small amount of shellac.

Clean the barrel threads on both sides with denatured alcohol to prevent it sticking again.

I'm so bummed... I broke the barrel trying to get it undone. Had to trash my new pen.

Sorry about your misfortune! sad.gif Save the pieces, however. You might work a deal with someone with a cracked shell. Even the nib will fit other Hero pens, also the Parker 51 if the small locking tab is bent flush with the rest of the nib.

Hi,

The plastic on the Hero 100 is rather fragile. sad.gif Breakage is a common problem, and people like Hisnibs had to weed out the cracked ones out of his shipment.
