I am torn between the Pilot Custom 823 and the Pelikan m800,both are about the same price,both are highly praised and I like them both-but can't afford both right now. I don't have any Pelikans,but do own a couple of VP's,which I enjoy. Help me decide.
Which would you choice and why?!
Thanks,
Harry

Hi,

I like the complete transparency of the Pilot a lot, and being all the rest comparable (overall quality and price), that would make choose it over the Pelikan.

The Pilot Custom 823 is a great pen but I wouldnt hasitate twice and go with the Pelikan M800.
I have the M800 and what can I say its a wonderful pen and a true classic.

Yes, I think the proper answer to this-pen-or-that-pen questions is "all of them." Fountain pens are not The Highlander. tongue.gif

What nib do you want? According to reviews the Pilot's B is an MF. Otoh, Pelikan's XFs and Fs have a poor reputation. Reading the reviews of the 823, the reviewers seem to consider an outstanding pen - it's high on my to-buy list. If you don't like either pen, they should be easy to sell on.

I have both. I use both. I like both. Get both.
If ya gotta go with one make it the Pelikan. wink.gif

Where can you even find a Pilot 823?

I've looked around at the usual sites (Swicher, FPH, Binder, World Lux) and they don't carry the 823. One review I read said it was not available in the US.

Will the pen write without loosening the rear cap?

Thanks
Bob

I am going with the Pelikan 800. Tough the 823 is a nice pen.

Usually I dont' respond to this type of thread but this one struck me because upon thinking about it, these two pens are probably as close in "feel" to me as any pens in any either/or threads I recall!

I have both and they are both in my daily rotation. You can't go wrong with either.

The Pelikan gives you the options of red, green black (do they make the blue in the 800?). It also offers more nib selection, although with nibmeisters like Richard Binder that is less of an issue than it would otherwise be. The filling system would also be more familiar to more repair people and Chartpak is good to deal with should there be a problem.

The Pilot might hold more ink. The filling system is way cool. If you go with it, the transparency of the brown is more pronounced than that of the black. The clear ones can be found but those are less formal in appearance of course.

I think that I'd give my vote to the Pelikan first. Kind of like getting a blue suit. Get the Pilot later.

Yes, three ways: black cap/blue stripe/gold trim, same with silver trim, or all solid blue with silver trim. (The last two are 805's which are the same except for the trim color.)

Richie at Cyberpens has them for, I think, $200+$15 for shipping.

There seems to be one or two perpetually on ebay.

Get the Pilot. There's something really special about it, in spite of its modest deportment.

Hi,
I also own and use both; as said, you cannot go wrong with either of them, but the Pilot is clearly my number one!
- It's smoother to write with;
- High ink capacity;
- cool looks, demonstrator;
- big nib;
- and last, but not least, a very nice filling system!

cheers,
