Hi people, I just joined this to find some experts in this field. I have found a Watermans Ideal Fountain pen. Its got a wavy design, thick gold filagree, and says"PATD 1884 MAY 23, 1899 WATERMANS IDEAL FOUNTAIN PEN. N.Y. U.S.A.& AUG. 4, 1903 or 1908 not sure. Im enclosing a couple of pictures. If anyone know about this pen, please help. I would like if you emailed me dircetly at: metmysoulmate@comcast.net Thank you for your time, Gigi, N.J.

The way to know what the pen is, and for that matter what size the nip is, is to look at the bottom of the pen. There will be a model number on it. let us know what the number is and we can go from there.

These old Waterman hard rubber eyedroppers and lever fills were such great pens. I love my 52.

You have a very, very nice Waterman 16 with 3 gold bands. It looks to be in quite good condition other than the nib. The 16 was one of the larger sizes of Waterman eyedropper pens and they can be worth at least a couple of hundred dollars. The cap is interesting because it has a rounded top, which is more typical of early Waterman eyedropper pens than it is of later ones. Since the flattened cap top was around by 1905, this pen probably dates very close to 1903 - if the cap is original. I am not sure about the cap being original though - did Waterman ever make a 3-band arrangement like that? Someone with more Waterman experience than I will have to chime in (David? DennisB.?).
The bad news is that a #6 nib to go in the pen is not a cheap nib to get and could cost you at least $100 right up front. If you can afford it I would get that nib replaced. You will want a "Waterman #6 New York" Nib.
What an awesome pen. Get it in the screw cap variant (16POC) and you have one of my dream pens.

That cap looks to be a non-Waterman replacement.
You don't see the combination of a cap band with two barrel bands.
In this case, the bands don't even match.
The cap is also much too rounded at the top.
