I seem to have successfully passed the FP gene on to both of my sons. wink.gif

4 years ago I bought #1 son a Waterman Phileas and am quite pleased that he still uses it and that it still writes as good as new. He is 12 now and has graduated from cartridges and has started experimenting with my ink collection.

Now, #2 son, who is 10, has asked for his own FP. My first thought was to buy another Phileas but since I am such a huge Pelikan fan myself, I've thought about getting him an inexpensive Pelikan.

But I'm not sure what to get for him since all my personal pens are M200's and up and I have no experience with the really inexpensive steel nibbed Pelikans.

What would you all suggest?

I think he would prefer something that looks like one of my pens - some of the really inexpensive Pelikans don't look fancy. Steel nib would be OK (and my preference for him) as would a piston-only pen.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Elaine
If you can find one, a Pelikan 150 would be just the thing. You can't switch nibs like the other Pelikans, but it looks like a "real" pen. I believe they are not being made any more.

I love the Pelikano pens a lot but I have to agree that they don't look like a 'real' pen like the Phileas and M200.
Pelikanos are great pens, good nibs, but I would be showing him a picture of them and ask if he'd like one before I'd buy one for him.

There's also the Pelikan Future. I like the 'silver' one. but again, doesn't look like a 'real' pen

Good job rnpatrick! That's a great thing to pass down. :-)
I have 7 children and my 4 oldest are already fountain pen users, while number 5 is still in training wheels (Core-rollerball). I just purchased to 2 Pelikanos for my girls and I have to say they really write great. One of my boys will be graduating to a Pel-250 for his birthday after starting off with a Sheaffer Javelin. Probably the suggestions from the others is the way to go. I'm just rambling because I love watching my kids write with FP's.

My son started with a Pelikano and now uses a Lamy Safari. If you have your heart set on a Pelikan, consider a Future, it's a step between a Pelikano and the M150 or M200.

If you can find a Pelikan GO, grab it..
That is the first commercial pen I bought for my daughter..
Great writing pens with piston fillers... she has two of them and they never fail to write even when not touched for a week or two.

What about the M100 in white with black trim? It is a piston filler, steel nib, and it is a black nib at that. Looks like a real pen, just white, which might just be different enough for a kid. Just a thought.

Edit - You can switch the nibs in this pen. As he gets older you could put a M200 14k gold nib in it.
