Hello all,
In april the new Edson black diamond will be available. There are some examples of an image available allready, for example on fountainpenhospital.com.
Has anyone of you seen this pen in person allready?
I wonder if it really looks good?!
I've talked to one person who saw it and she was not too impressed....
Please let me know your appreciated input!
cheers,
Luca

$250 more for the plain Jane black instead of the gold and blue version? Get out of town.
If you want this, I'd wait - I predict it won't sell well and will get remaindered sooner than normally would happen. But quite frankly I wouldn't pay the same for it as I would for the blue, so unless it really dropped in price I wouldn't be interested.

Really? I'd have the new version over the blue any day. It does seem unreasonably expensive, however.

I don't know about that. I think it ascribes a level of rational behavior that I have not seen often, after all it is an Edson and it costs $200 more than the other one. That has to be very attractive for a good portion of the buying market.

Ah - you mean the "call it a Montblanc, double the price and they'll be lined up at the door when you open" mentality? Yes, I had failed to take that mind set into account.

The retail of the old Edson is £615 (apprx. $1200). Although beautiful, I fear what the new one shall be.

The pictures make it look like a slightly textured matte black... I wonder if that's correct, or if it's a shiny / translucent black, like the previous Edsons? And I wonder if the cap is silver, or platinum?

Thanks for the pictures guys.
The more I look at this the more I am reminded of the Parker Centennial - you can just hear them in the design and marketing offices saying "Well we've run out of creative steam on this model - what shall we do next?"
Remind me - what have we already had in this model. There was the upper end bunch (Boucheron and sterling) which we can ignore for the purposes of this discussion.
Wasn't there a Ruby, or am I thinking of the Carene?
And the Sapphire.
And then this version that not only costs more money (surely a result of increased production costs as this would be hard to see as any sort of a deluxe version compared to the previous one - quite the contrary).

I think the cap is platinum plated and the body is the same shiny translucent finish as the previous models. -- I don't know, I rather like the black/platinum combination, it's an elegant look.

I concur with Petra: its looks are elegant.
And less spectacular, which is also good: I love beautiful, expensive pens, but don’t care about showing them off –ignore my avatar. Of all the Edsons so far, I think I’d prefer this one (though not at any price!).

I too prefer the Black Diamond Edson to any of its previous iterations. There is, in my mind, something understated and elegant in simple black and platinum. Yes, the price jump is not insignificant, but I'm not sure it's not a reflection, in part at least, of the economic times in which we find ourselves.
Further, let's not forget that the Edson consists of 31 separate parts. I'm sure it's not the most complicated pen ever made, but it is a fairly complex design, especially by today's standards. Moreover, it's my understanding that Waterman developed a new collector system for its Edson line to help regulate ink flow in various conditions, much like the highly-touted collector in the Parker "51."
And FWIW, I'll be selling them at extremely competitive prices, so feel free to view my comments with whatever bias you deem appropriate.

Various off the top comments.
1. I am not sure it is running out of creativity as there is just so much you can do with the Edson design.
2. 31 parts for a C/C pen! Another case of engineers doing something just so because they could.
3. Notice the shift from "icky" to "looks nice, I want one" and such? It just shows that Waterman does do some marketing research.
4. I still think the discounting before release is not a good business decision, but then they are you folks's businesses and not mine.
5. I look forward to seeing how this pen performs in the used market next year. I would like to have an Edson, any finish, but I really don't think this finish or any of the Edsons will ever get down to my "open the wallet" price point.
