Full Version: Pelikan Nib Engraving

I have just got my very first Pelikan, an M400 White Tortoise with a Fine nib. The pen is beautiful, a real pleasure to write with, but I have noticed something strange on the nib. The engraving seems to be a bit off-centre, as you can see in the photo:

My question is, is this engraving alignment variation a normal thing or something that I should complain about (and to who)? Is it worth bothering?

Thanks! smile.gif

Hi,

It should be fine. Most of the time, the slit and engraving are just right but a small number have it off centre.

Ok, so it's something normal I guess. Nothing to worry about.

The nib is an excellent writer anyway, very smooth. smile.gif

I think they engrave it by hand instead of by machine, so it could be off-center.

yeah right, and they hand hammer the pelikan beak clip too wink.gif The nib is engraved by machine, and the engraving being off center is normal, but not very good QC...

Hi,

It's punched and engraved by machine, but the slitting is done by hand--the nib is positioned and the diamond saw cuts through what's supposed to be the centre.

I would consider this off-center engraving as a "feature" and something Mr. Benz would consider ULTRA RARE!!!!

From the photo, the logo is clearly visible. Have you purchased your pen recently (2007). The logo has the P E L I K A N with two siblings. Therefore is it possible that it was manufactured before 2003 (when the company changed to the new logo which has only one sibling.)?

Yeah, I did purchase it this year, but it was probably manufactured earlier. I think Pelikan hasn't made the white tortoise model for quite some time now.

I can get you a better photo of the logo if you want, was only focusing on nib engraving alignment when I took that shot.

The engraving on my Grand Place is also off-center.
