Full Version: Stuck Piston and Lubrication Question
The Fountain Pen Network > Brand Focus > The Montblanc Forum
Mr.Rene
Greetings!
If a modern Montblanc fountain pen, piston filler, like #149 or #146, has stuck piston, What kind of lubrication will you use,Silicone or Vaseline?
I could use Silicone,in fact, I use silicone in my Pelikans, but Tom Westerich says in his web site "do not use Silicone grease to lubricate the barrelīs inside of modern MB pens, it might damage the resin. I do normally use a very thin film of Vaseline"
I would like some comments and advices about it.
Best Regards,

Hi Rene,
yes, do use Vaseline, its based on mineral oil and will not rot with time.

do not use Silicone - I was told by MB services themselves not to use Silicone.
It might affect the resin.

Tom

Oh my, here we go again... sad.gif THere must be dozens of threads in this forum sternly warning against the use of vaseline, and advising silicone instead (just search with the word "silicone").
WHo should we believe?!

In this case I would send my Montblanc to Montblanc or Mr Mora

This bears further investigation.
If you look at the properties of silicone greases, they are considered safe with virtually all elastomers and plastics. I would be very interested to know what peculiar plastic Montblanc might be using that would be damaged by silicone grease and not by Vaseline -- which is not recommended for use with most elastomers, and which is quite bad for some (latex rubbers, for example).

Not to get the thread too off track, but how often should you be lubricating the pistons?

How do you know when to do so?

Dillo
Hi,

Lubricate it whenever it gets stiff. I'd recommend using silicone grease because it is considered safe.
