I won't be changing my user name or icon to MYU, but I was very pleased to get this pen at a bargain price at the LA Show:

When some pioneers of Japanese vintage pens (Ron Dutcher and Russ Stutler, among others) brought the pen community's attention to the MYU and Murex pens some years ago, I was enthralled by these sleek pens. At the time, the price for the even stainless steel MYU was at the far end for what I would pay for a pen--well over $200, even used (many were being sold NOS).

But as time went on and MYU continued to be found and sold to eager collectors, the prices came down a bit. Finally, Russ offered me a price I couldn't resist and I got a stainless steel MYU. The nib was very fine and I ended up trading it for another vintage pen, but I didn't forget how great these pens were.

So when Stan Klemanowicz offered me a black stripe MYU at the LA pen show last week, for a price not much more than the early prices for the stainless steel pens, I jumped on it. This time, the nib is a smooth XF, not a needle, and the black stripes make for a wonderful visual and tactile experience. This one is a keeper!

Congratulations!

It's a gorgeous pen. I have a regular MYU and a Murex. I pull them out when I want to feel like a space-age funky momma. biggrin.gif

Good! 'Cause I already have that spot, Dan. roflmho.gif

I was an impulsive choice at the time... guess I'm kinda stuck with it. But I love the look of this pen... doesn't hurt getting it some exposure in an avatar. smile.gif

But wow, congrats on the deal! Did you know Stan prior to going to the LA pen show?

I love the look and feel of the pen and it is functioning flawlessly. I love the way it fits in my hand. I'd saw it is one of a dozen or so pens I own that could be the "only" pen I owed--not that that is likely to happen!

Yes, I've known Stan for a few years now and have bought from him several times. When I was president of our local club in 2005, we got him to fly up to SF and give a talk on vintage Japanese pens, a collecting focus few of us around here know much about. Stan gave a great talk and showed off some amazing pens.

I never used one until I was at the show and tried Dan's MYU. It really is a super writer and very smooth. I was quite impressed with it!!!

Very sleek! The striped version is my favorite but that's a lot of metal. How's the weight?
Dan Carmell
No, it's quite light! I just weighed it and a Vac 51 (DJ) and it was 2 grams lighter.

That's a surprise. Gorgeous and sleek to boot. Reckon I'll have to add another one to my "Gotta Buy One Someday" list. laugh.gif

Of all the Murex models out there, this is my favorite. I have seen a red stripe one, which Pilot marketd for women, and I have seen a gold plated model. I suspect though that the gold plating wasn't from Pilot, but done by a second party. Still, A gold Murex was quite a sight.

Nice photo Ron,

here is a shot of mi little Murex and MYU group. Actually the red stripe one is branded as Rotax which is a Taiwanese brand that used the parts from Pilot. Everything on the pen is the same as the Murex ones (datecode: H179) just instead of Pilot, Rotax is imprinted on the cap. If you have any info on these pens i would love to know some more. The pen was purchased in Taipei.

Hello:

Sorry to take so long to reply to this. A little more information... Pilot made a similar Murex Sr. for the Korean market under the name Tiger88.
