Hello. ohmy.gif

Wow, I wonder how much this will wind up going for.

(Is it because of the '8' in the second half of the number?)

Yeah, a 58 Waterman is a very, very large pen.

Some of the questions are amusing... "robert" has some nerve! smile.gif

I noticed that too!

I was sitting there reading all of that 'you totally wanna give me your pen because eBay is shifty and I'm solid gold' speech and it made me start to laugh. laugh.gif

I know if I got a message like that, even if I had no clue what a Waterman was, I would automatically figure it was probably worth twice as much. headsmack.gif

I did a Google search for Waterman 58, and there are people who make realy good (judging from the pictures I see on the website) reproductions of this pen for arround $800 - $1000, A little too good if you ask me, I would have to think twice before buying a "Gunuine" one off the net.

I love seeing Sellers who dont know what an item is worth, get fantastic prices. I collect vintage fishing lures, one seller had listed a lure for $1 or buy it now $10, seller had no Idea about lures, Some idiot placed a bet for $1, and it ended up fetching just over $1200. imagine the shock these sellers must get.

Oh wow! That is very cool. smile.gif That's a place I never would have figured to find quite a bit of money either!! I certainly agree that its something hard not to smile about though! Its just neat to think someone was trying to get a little extra change on the side, and they wound up with a treasure they had no clue they even managed to track down. On the same note though, now I kind of can't help wondering what all I've managed to pass up or just walk obliviously by in antique stores.

Oddly enough, I actually just wound up with a Red Ripple myself! Its only a #5 and its one of the ones with a colored band & nib. I'm pretty much chalking that find up to a moment of good timing since it was picked out of a big crowd of pens offered by a dealer. It came in today, and my excitement kind of hit a pocket of reality when I saw that the pink band wasn't very pink anymore and there was a little bit of age taking an off-kilter hit on the way the nib and the feed were lined up.

I guess though, in a way, after reading this.. that's kind of a good thing. (If anything, this little guy is definitely as old as he needs to be. laugh.gif)

I don't know what reproductions you might be looking at, but there is nothing currently on the market that could ever be confused for the real thing. In any event, for $800-1000 you can get a perfectly decent original in black hard rubber, and if you are talking about red hard rubber or Ripple, rod stock that could be mistaken for original is simply not available.

Thompson Pens does make a replica 58s in BHR and Cardinal red, with several overlay styles available, as well as custom overlays. I am not sure if the Cardinal is actual RHR or another material. They are very good reproductions, with all imprints correct, except that it says "Repro - 200X" under the imprints to make clear it is not an original. I imagine one could polish out the Repro imprint and try to pass it off as original, but it would be hard to buff out the imprint successfully, and the $1000.00 outlay would not result in a lot of return.

However, nobody has a comperable stock to the Red Ripple design, which is what David (vintagepens) was referring to, and which is what sold in this auction. A BHR 58 would probably fetch a bit less than the red ripple.
