HI there!
I'm new to the Network and joined because I have been hooked by a pen I bought not too long ago and knew there must be some other folks out there with the same interests. I'm locate don the NW California Coast.

I recently bought a Rotring Core and have been really happy with it. I now would like to expand and by a bit better pen and a larger Nib. I have been looking at several pens and have been narrowing it down to one of the Pelikan pens. I have been looking at the 200 and the 250. Cost is a real factor for me and would really welcome any recommendations any one of you might have for me. I write daily in a Journal and will be starting a new project that will entail quite heavy manual writing requirements.

Thanks again for any suggestions or comments, and its a pleasure to have found this site and the wealth of information it contains.

Warmest Regards,
Stewart

Welcome!

Pen choice very much depends on what you like. I have an m200 that I love and an m215 will be arriving any day now. The difference is that the m215 is a bit heavier since it is metal instead of plastic. The 250 has a gold nib vs the 200 with the steel nib but both are plastic so similar in weight.

If you will be doing allot of writing, and you are interested in Pelikan, perhaps you should consider the Level 5? I have one of those coming as well and I've heard they hold quite a bit of ink so would be good for someone who does allot of writing.

Enjoy your stay here. I know I have so far.

HI and thanks!

Thanks for the very quick response! wow... Its good to know the diff. between the 2 pens. One being plastic and the other being metal. I think the extra weight might be a good thing, although I have never felt one of these so I have no real basis for comparison. Is there any real diff. in the NIb's of these? one being gold plated and the other plain stainless ? this is the confusing part for me. I am just not sure what I should be going for. I have been reading many of the reviews here and it seems many prefer a gold nib to stainless. I know there are as many opinions as there are grains of sand in the world tongue.gif and I'm sure much of this for me is going to be trail and error on my part. Thanks again for taking the time to help me along a bit.

I don't think the 250 is gold plated, I'm pretty sure it's 14k solid gold. The gold nib will stand up to pretty much any ink while the steel nib may start to pit if you use acidic inks. Someone posted a picture of the difference once, but I can't seem to find it.

This might help your understanding:

In my experience, a steel nib can write every bit as good as a gold nib. Others may have a different view. Maybe start a topic in the Pelikan forum and someone with more knowledge can help you.

Welcome to FPN. I have a couple of Pelikans. One is old and the other is new. The new one I have is the Epoch. I like it very much and it is one of my favorite writers. It uses cartridges so it is not a common pen here. I think most Pelikan users prefer the piston filled pens. I do as well but this pen was given to me by my wife. It has a unique cartridge holding system and it will hold two of the short international carts so I've not run out of ink yet. The older pen I have is a Silvexa from the 60's and it is one of my journaling pens. Enjoy your quest for your new pen. I doubt it will be your last.

I don't have any 215's, but I've got several M200's and all have been great writers for me. I like lightweight pens, heavy pens wear my hand out. Through countless fills with various inks and Heaven knows how many pages written, the nibs on my 200's write as well, if not better, than when I bought them!

Another real asset with the 'classic' Pelikans is that they post very low in your pocket--great for suit wear. Also, the Pelikan ballpoints use Parker-style refills, if that's an issue.

Hi smile.gif Stewart and welcome to FPN! Like Johnr55, I'm pleased with my new Pelikan. I don't think you can go wrong with a Pelikan M200.

I have had my Pelikan M200 [green marble with a medium nib] for about two weeks and I love it. I like the filling system and the window that lets you see if you're running low on ink. I find the nib to be very smooth - makes a nice wet line. The pen light as a feather. The only thing I'm having to get used to is the threads being lower down on the grip than my other pens. The first time I wrote for an extended time with the Pelikan, it bothered me a little, but I'm getting used to it. smile.gif

Hello and welcome to the FPN! biggrin.gif

Thank you Everyone!

Such a warm welcome and good constructive answers too! Thank you so very much to everyone for taking the time to write and help steer me in the right direction.

I just decided to take the plunge and ordered an M200 in Medium from Swisher and some Noodlers American Eel in turquoise to go with it. Should not take more than a few days to get here from Virgina since the Rotring Core was here in 2 or 3 days , fantastic shipping from them by the way.

I do quite a bit of drawing in Pen and Ink and use Rapidograph pens and different types of ink for that so I am getting a real education in Ink and the nuances of each type and brand. I can see that I will have to add room on another shelf for the ink tongue.gif

I have been reading through many of the posts and trying to educate myself and get caught up so to speak, there is much information here but I am wading through it !

Thanks again everyone, sure do know how to make a person feel welcome!
