hello to all-
i just started getting into fp so i dont know much yet. today i was excited to see that my new pen had arrived. m200 amber demo from binder with a steel cursive italic .7mm nib. after inking it i started writing and it layed down a nice thick glossy line with the pelikan brilliant black ink. smooth and fun to use. but, i had to put the pen away for a couple hours until the kids went to bed then when i picked it up again the flow was very dry and the down stroke every few words starts half way through the stroke. any suggestions? why would the pen flow very well then slow? i tried expelling the ink and re-inking. no change.

help! please- cheers,
ryan

I would suggest that you expell all the ink and thoroughly flush/clean the pen with water. Sometimes, brand new pens have some oils/residues that might interfere with their initial functioning. I had a similar experience with a new binder italic M200 nib last year, but it resolved after a thorough flushing. Made me suspect that there was some unseen particules/residue that was interfering with the ink flow...

Hope that helps !

Strange - I thought that buying a pen from someone like Richard was supposed to obviate the need for these sort of measures.

Rinse it with some soapy water.

i emptied the ink and rinsed a couple times with tap water but that didnt work. should i remove the nib and rinse it with soapy water? i guess i am just a bit leary about removing the nib.

thanks for the advise,
ryan

Just fill it and empty it a few times with dishwashing-soapy water. Then fill it with a good flowing ink, like the waterman florida blue. Write with it a few days. It that does not work, send it back.

Did you left the pen uncapped for several hours? If so, that explains it...

The pen should be fine if left for couple of minutes or even up to a hour with no cap, but prolonged period of exposure to air will definitely dry out the nib and make a slow starter out of it...

superfly- no i didnt leave it uncapped for a long period.

so, i rinsed again with soapy water a number of times and flushed with tap water many times and am leaving it to dry for a couple hours. is pelikan brilliant black a good flowing ink? the only other ink that i have so far is pr avocado (nicen green).

thanks again,
ryan

Maybe you should contact binder?
I think he will either tell you how to make it work again, or fix this for you.

myriadstars- yeah, i am not too worried about it. i know that richard really stands behind his nibs. after flushing 10-15 times with soapy water and rinsing 10-15 time with tap water, same results. very low ink flow. strange that it flowed well when i first inked it but after a couple hundred words it slowed down to almost nothing. the brilliant black comes out mostly grey. i have tried many different angles also but still... i will try rinsing again then i will talk to richard on monday.

cheers,
ryan

Ryan, please send the pen back to me. When I test a nib or a pen, I don't write extensively, as there is simply not time for that -- I wouldn't have time to do any "real" work. smile.gif Most pens are just fine with the partial-page test I do; a few aren't, and I want to see those pens come back so I can make them right.

richard-
i will send it to you monday.

thank you,

From my experience, all Pelikan inks are poor flowers, compared to other brands, like Waterman, Rotring, Parker...

I don't like the feeling when writing with any of their inks, although I have several bottles of them, like the Royal Blue, Blue Black, Red, Black...

go figure.

hello again-

yesterday i received my pen back from richard binder. he included a note that stated that he cleaned and slightly adjusted the ink flow. the pen writes beautifully now, just perfect. exactly what i was looking for in a fp, very good price, nice looking, great line variation, smooth nib, good ink flow and the .7mm nib is the perfect size for how small i write. i will have this pen in my pocket daily.
for any one that has wanted to try out a cursive italic nib but has had reservations, this is a great pen to try one out on. i havent had any problems writing with it.

cheers,
ryan
