Just got this one on eBay.... and at a decent price... not necessarily a Griz deal but I wanted it...
This now gives me a Burgundy, Green, Brown and Silver Pearl First Generation Vacumatics. I believe that is the only colors these pens came in.
Of course I may be wrong and David will correct me and I will be on the hunt again blink.gif blink.gif
Date code on the pen is 26 and on the pencil 36... which should make them 1936 production.
Look at the writing sample from this pen... that is what really sold me... a stub with some minor flex... OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH
First Generation Vacumatic Pen/Pencil set... with what appears to be a stub nib...
I have a 1941 Double Jewel Vacumatic Junior with the same nib (w/o flex) and it has great line variation.... when this one comes in that one will most likely get sold...

Let's see...

Opaque Black

Longitudinal Stripes Black.

Very rare standard sized "Crystal" black.

Conventional Black stripes (you did not mention this in citing four colors in the first post).

Pretty nib and very pretty handwriting.
Could you please post a picture of the nib from the side?
I am interested in the thickness of the nib and its variation along the length.

Haha Tom, looks like you got smacked down by the Doc. ph34r.gif

He asssskkkkkkssss me. He asssskkkkkssss me. And, i shall have him. I will chase him around the moons of Nibia and around the Antares maelstrom and around Perdition's Flames before i give him up.

BTW David, you have not made any mention of the nib on this pen...
What kind of premium is a nib like that worth.....
I also recently obtained a Junior (2 band) .1. Silver Pearl w/ Speedline filler that has a factory stub also. I would say it is about a .6mm stub.

And as for chasing my around the moons of Nibia, be my guest as long as we end up where I can find my black Standard rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Nib? I so rarely look at nibs, unless pricing in an exotic nib.

On one hand we have the Bruce Speary Thesis... "Collectors cannot add". Meaning... mixing value adding features onto pricey pens is inefficient (eg. Red Maxima, Star Clip, Ultrabroad flex nib) because folks wont cough up the dough for the serial value additions. He might be right. But to basic pens (eg. most Vac Standards), a great nib sure does add value. I'd figure at least $50 extra if truly a broad stub nib.

Heck, i'm sure i have enough parts lying around to whip something together. Not to mention the scarce longitudinal windows black Standard on the website.

I've got a black vacumatic, in my whopping collection of 4 Vacs blush.gif . I'm not that good at identifying at this early stage in my pen worshipping career. Its got No.5. on the barrel made in U.S. 5" capped 1 jewel on cap, and i've made it real shiny and purty animal26.gif

David,
How could you even suggest such a thing to me.... unsure.gif unsure.gif
Are you trying to ruin my reputation by having me buy retail blink.gif blink.gif

However, if I were to buy retail, you are the first person I would talk to...

Third Generation- either Major or Junior depending on trim (Major- diamond clip, single cap-band)

What about Reticulated and Shadow Wave?? Did those not come in 1st Generation pens, because if they didn't I have some mighty rare pens. biggrin.gif

Did the shadow wave come in different colors in the 1st Gen other than black? I have a black one here but don't recall seeing other colors in that motif.

Nice little collection you have there Griz, now you can start collecting other pens and leave some vacs for us. ph34r.gif

Yup, got keyed in on the 1st Gen and forgot standard.

I will have to start resorting to sniping if Griz continues this. Oh yeah, and on ebay too. ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

Hey, Griz said he now had all the colors. If one accepts the definition that black technically is not a color in and of itself, but a lack of all colors, then Griz has indeed collected all the colors. No need to buy anymore vacumatics! laugh.gif

Very nice Tom, congrats!! I'll take that '41 stub nib off of you when this one comes in.

That's some mighty purty writing that pen does, Tom. smile.gif

Would all those variations of black be required? If COLOR is what you're representing, then wouldn't ONE black count? blink.gif
SMG
Ssshhhh, we like to try and confuse the Griz with these distractions. It gives us more time to fish vacs out of ebay when he is researching whether he needs all of these variants or not. ph34r.gif

But you are right, one black would suffice to truely state that you had all of the colors of 1st Gen Standard Vacumatics. biggrin.gif

Took delivery of yet another major vac in silver today all the way from the U.S of A, its a beauty and fully working like all my vacs rolleyes.gif only one fault sad.gif clip has been abused, bent couple of times by look, will need to remove from pen and straighten, when i learn how blush.gif

mmm....a vac is definitely on my list to buy....one day, one day...
gregamckinney
belfast-popeye,
Removing Vac clips is very straightforward- which is not to say "always easy."

Under the top jewel (which is threaded in) is a hollow screw that holds the clip to the top of the barrel. It is not uncommon to have difficulty in removing the jewel, but many folks have good success with a rubber jar opener pressed down on the jewel while twisting.

This clip retention mechanism is the same on 51's, and Richard Binder
has a great cross-section diagram on his site that will give you a better
idea of the clip mechanics than my description can:

Hate to have to say it, ol' Griz, but even I have a rather minty solid black Vac, first quarter 1946 major. I mean, doesn't EVERYONE??? Well, I mean, ANYONE who is the least bit SERIOUS. Hahahahahaha!!! tongue.gif

(Note to everyone else: while Griz is hitting Fleabay hard to get his black Vac, we will use the occasion to avail ourselves of sumgai 51s that he else would have snatched away from us!) laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
