Hi Rebecca,

I ordered one from John a couple of days ago, and I expect it to arrive on Monday. I'll get back to you with my impressions of the pen as soon as I have time to test it.

Other than John, I'm not sure of any US sellers. I know that a couple of UK dealers have them. But for what it's worth, I think buying from John is a good idea with Sailors because when they're well-tuned, they are the best nibs I've used....but I've also had a few bad ones. (no affiliation..etc).

yech, I'll have to think about trying to come up with some $ to buy a couple 1911's before they're gone if that's the replacement. Actually sort of looks like the old 1911 actually doesn't it?

I received the Sapporo today, and I'm quite pleased! The pen is significantly shorter than the 1911 (maybe M size), but it's very comfortable to use. I got the rhodium-plated version, which is very attractive, and unsurprisingly the nib is superbly smooth.

It's kind of funny: for a long time, Sailor seemed to be copying the MB look with the 1911, but these Sapporos look amazingly similar to the Aurora Optima. Even the proportions are rather similar, the Sapporo being maybe just a touch slimmer.

I can hardly believe the Sapporo is meant as a replacement for the established 1911 fanily.

I rather think this is a separate family along the Professional Gear design, which started mid 2005. The Sapporo and Sapporo Short are the slimer sisters of the Pro Gear and Pro Gear Short.

For some markets, the Pro Gear flat top family is simply more suitable, as e.g. here in Germany there is no real market for Montblanc copies (including myself as a Pro Gear owner). Actually Rolf Thiel from missing-pen.de is still the only importer here. Also in other narkets, there are people who don't want a MB lookalike but want Sailor quality.
The UK sellers were the first to introduce them to the European markets, it may be even before the NA sellers. unsure.gif
