Hello,
After using the search function several times, I could not find a general thread for De Atramentis inks.
I've never used De Atramentis inks, but I looked at their colour chart and was quite impressed by their nice inks:
De Atramentis colour chart at fountainpen.deI am thinking of ordering some bottles, so I was wondering: what is your experience with this ink? Does it flow well, is it creepy, do you have any problems? Or is it just as great as it looks? Are there other things worth mentioning about this ink?
Thanks in advance for your comments!

Hi Anne!
The Search thread is a bit funky sometimes - I can search for the same thing in the same way and get different responses each time.
I've found a couple of threads that discuss this ink - hope it helps!

Hi Casmi,
You don't happen to know a good source of this ink in the UK do you? Or do I have to learn German?

Hi George
Sorry - I've not actually looked for these inks before so I can't help you.
There are others on FPN however, who are a lot more knowledgeable about inks and where to obtain them - I'm sure they'll chime in soon if they know of a place to get it!

Hi Anne,
I've only ever tried two of the reds but I really liked them. They flowed well, were not creepy at all and in short were as great as they looked (apart from the price).
George, I know a good German mail order service where they say they speak English (no affiliation, am just satisfied customer). There's no colour chart on their homepage, though, but I think if you simply mailed them what you'd like, it should be no problem. A bottle of 30 ml costs € 7.95 there, by the way.
"missing-pen" mail order email addressI hope this'll help.

I have been using some of this ink for a while. Nice flow, little creep and very deep and rich colours.
There is a palate at...
http://community.fountainpen.de/content/view/184/96/I purchased mine at Laywines in Toronto. There are mixed reviews in a former discussion. I didn't have any issues.
http://www.laywines.com/Laywines_manufactu....php?category=5The deep red, Bordeauxrot is great.

My experience is that I've got one bottle--Bamboo Green--and I don't want any more of it, not in any colors.

Did it not work well in your pens, or do you just find the color not what you expected?

The ink worked fine. It's just that any outfit that would put out a color that ugly and that washed out--I am definitely not interested in even seeing anything else it puts out, much less paying for anything else it puts out.
As far as nib creep on my $350 pens, I don't know about that because I don't have any $350 pens. For all I know it might creep all over the place or it might not creep at all. But the flow was fine. The color is just very ugly and very washed out, bad enough to do away with all curiosity I had about this line of inks.

I have had three bottles of this ink, and passed them all on to others. Actually the ink that Cowdad is talking about came from me.
In my opinion, I actually liked the shading that I got from the Bamboo Green that I sent off to Cowdad, but I found out that I am not really a green ink person. Oh well.
The other color that I tried was Carmine red, which is a beautiful intense red that shades really nicely. The flow of both inks was reasonable, but I did find the ink slightly watery. As I am now using nearly exclusively Noodlers one can understand why I might think other inks are watery.
I too bought my ink at Laywines and was just there last weekend. I spoke to the owner and he does not carry all of the colors that DeAtramentis makes. He will special order inks for people, but his next order will not be until late summer.
The range of colors is fairly broad, but I just found the inks were not for me. Also the Carmine would leave a pretty decent amount of schmutz on the nib if it was not used regularly. I didn't use the red that often so it became a ritual of cleaning off the nib and getting the pen restarted if I left it for too long.
Cheers,
SG

one of the linked threads had the link to the translated website, as linked by Old Griz. i have to say i am intrigued. they have Dickens, Verdi, Mozart, and Beethoven! (Now if only they had Thoreau, I think that would be a very dark moss green.)
seriously, i'm interested in reviews of this ink but the inks themselves are apparently hard to come by.

Does anyone know what came of the "large order" from Germany in the Old Griz thread? Is it still happening?
Just wondering....

Yes, you did send me the bottle of Bamboo Green, and, despite what I've said about that ink, I very, very appreciate your sending it to me. I was on the verge of placing an order for 3 or so bottles from Laywine's the day you offered it to me.
After seeing and using that ink, I have absolutely no curiosity about any De Atramentis ink. I'm almost exclusively on Noodler's too, but there are a few PR's and Diamine's that I like a lot.

Hi all,
The discussion here made me soooo curious and today I finally decided to do it: I ordered 4 bottles of De Atramentis ink... (

sigh... I had a weak moment. Once you've seen their palette, you just cannot choose, ...

).
Once I've received the inks, I defnitely will write a review!!

I've had to postpone my own order for a while, but I'll be looking forward to your review! Did you end up ordering from Rolf, or someone else?

No, I ordered them straight from Tintenmanufaktur Jansen at their webshop:

I haven't seen the packages yet, they must be new for De Atramenris inks. In Germany, I've only seen naked bottles in shops so far.
My De Atramentis inks untill now:
I like:
Stahlblau (steel blue): my favourite so far, a quite dark turquoise or somewhat tealish blue colour, very interesting and I haven't seen anything similar so far. Very good flow and saturation, negligible feathering, best colour result with dry pens.
Aubergine (eggplant): colour just as the name says, dark and saturated, feathers quite easilly (only Paper like Clairefontaine recommended), flows well.
Lavendelblau (lavender blue) {was incorrectly named Veilchenblau (violet blue) by me !}: no blue whatsoever, but nice warm purplish violet colour. Is new for me and can't say much about behaviour yet.
I don't like:
Petrol: no bluish tones, just an oily yellowish green. Not what I expected from samples, didn't try the ink in pens, so no idea of features.
Ebony: a dark brown
Our second largest local dealer allways has some colours of the De Atramentis range (even some wine inks), but the price is prohibitive for extensive shopping: last year € 8.50, now € 9.50.
Edited for ink name correction.

They look fabulous! The bottle looks a lot like the Marlen's ink bottles, though.

What a coincidence! From all the colours I could have ordered, I bought three of the colours you mention: Stahlblau, Aubergine & Petrol!
I'm still busy scanning examples for my review, but the colours are so different once you've scanned them!

There's a simple explanation, most (if not all) independent (Diamine, De Atramentis, Callifolio ...) and some pen brand ink makers (Caran d'Ache) use the selection of bottles offered by
Vetrerie Italiane Foresta.
They may be the only European glass factory still making ink bottles.

Delighted to hear you'll be reviewing these Anne Marie! Are you in Europe, North America, or somewhere else entirely?
Very cool to find out where the ink bottles are made. Thanks SaintSimon!

Thanks, DilletanteG.
It was actually quite easy to find out. I just had to look at the bottom side of some ink bottles to find the same manufacturer name on different brand's bottles. The rest was done by googling ...

Aahh, deep sorry, I made a mistake!
I don't have 'Veilchenblau' / Violet Blue but 'Lavendelblau' / Lavender Blue!
The above description still applies.
