Full Version: Greek Key - Gold Filled Section

Hi all.

Some time ago I cleaned up a Whal-Eversharp for a friend (new sac, nib alignment and smoothing, general clean and polish) similar to the one David pictured here, although it wasn't the largest, but rather a more common size: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...ndpost&p=198989

That pen showed a fair bit of wear near the nib end of the section, where the gold had been worn back a mm or two and was pretty ragged.

I was wondering whether thare were any sections like this available, and perhaps what they might be worth.

Gerry

Hey Gerry!
Let me know if you find a source for the all metal sections...got several that could us a makeover. Not really worn away, but more like eaten away by excess ink that the original owner(s) never cleaned off (corrosion is the proper term I believe!).

People who do a lot of restoration of pens found in the wild, end up with many loose parts where some pen parts build up over time. So there should definitely be a few small caches of gold filled sections out there. #2's are the easiest to find, #4's are less common, but every now and then one turns up. If you ever get in a jam for one, you could drop me a line. While I do not make a business of selling parts, and I do not intend to supply someone's restoration business with parts, I have been know to help a Wahl Eversharp collector out from time to time. I am sure there are others on FPN on this forum or who post to the Repairs forum who might have similar supplies.

Yes, if I had to describe the damage it would be 'corroded'. Funny, I didn't think gold corroded like that, but it sure seemed eaten away.

It is not the gold fill that corrodes, it is the underlying pot metal; the gold just goes along for the ride when the metal beneath it corrodes and flakes/breaks away.

Thanks for mentioning it Syd. I'm sure all Wahl-Eversharp collectors appreciate knowing where they might get a helping hand.

I've got a minature ring-top PP set coming from the 'bay same as David's (but, of course, not as perfect...). Can't wait to see what they look like (pen and pencil). They're engraved with initials GLK - gee, 2 of my 3 initials... GKE...

PS: Re. the corrosion - that makes a lot of sense, although I couldn't see evidence of pot metal. The gold seemed to be a thick layer, almost like foil that was formed over a plastic/HR material that was the section.
Wahlnut
It is a thin gold filled maleable pot metal that was shrunk - actually pressed (squeezed down), just like the trim rings were on plastic and HR pen caps and barrels) onto the HR section.

A plastic purse pen?

Will be curious about color/condition when it arrives. I've not yet shot ringtop Purse Pens (just clasp). Might wanna shoot it. smile.gif

Sorry David, I meant Pen-Pencil by the PP reference. It's actually a Greek Key Gold Filled set much like the one you pictured. http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...ndpost&p=198989

Hope it can be restored to almost as nice as the one in your photo, but that's gonna depend on the stuff that may not have been declared by the vendor. The overall cost of the set wasn't too much - he sold the parts separately, but no one wanted the pencil but me, once the pen was sold.

I'll let y'all know what it looks like when I get ahold of it.

Gerry
