Are pen boxes that lay flat ok for inked pens or are stands better because the pens are upright?

Don't worry about that unless your particular pen proves to have a problem. The vast majority of modern pens store well in any direction. (Except on an airplane, where some pens are at risk for leaking unless kept upright.)

I unceremoniously store about 40 inked pens in a desk drawer and most of them will write even after being ignored for a few weeks. Some pens seem to dry out from loneliness an lack of attention ... but I don't think it's because they're horizontal.... they're just needy.
