So, I 've been lurking for a while and in another forum there is always a discussion and question about how to spot a fake MB. I have heard it is different for different eras - from W. Germany on the clip ring to Pil under the clip. Does anyone know the definitive answer?

The definitive answer is, there is no definitive answer. Anybody who claims to have the single correct answer is not telling the truth. Don't trust the authenticity of any pen that looks like a MB. Don't buy from someone you don't know, unless you're expecting to receive a fake.

Do they make fake piston filler montblancs?

The most obvious signs are IPG nibs (or otherwise incorrect nibs), wild colored Meisterstucks, Starwalkers, Bohemes, etc, and painted stars. The Pix logo underneath the clip and serial numbers are not on all authentic pens and may be on fake pens.

Hi,

Remember, the clips. For modern MB pens, the clips have mostly plenty of markings on the underside of the clip and the clip has a solid piece of metal welded under it to hold it on your shirt.

Unfortunately the IPG nib distiction is now insufficient - I have seen a number of examples with hallmarks and the correct Montblanc style etched onto the nib.

The only real way to tell is to go to an authorised retailer and feel the difference in quality. Vintage examples are also faked.
