Full Version: Recommendations for cleaning a vac and p51

Hi I just purchased a bottle of Private Reserve avacado ink that I want to use in one of my vacs and p51 aerometric. I have read a couple of threads, some recommend to fill and flush followed by wrapping the nib and shaking like an old thermometer. I was wondering if this will work with the p51 as i understand the feed was designed to hold alot of ink. Do I have to invest time and money to make one of the salad spinners to clean the 51 well enough to go from black to avacado. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

The "51" Aero will flush easier than the Vac, fill with water, pump out and repeat with clean cool water until it runs clean, then shake down to get any remaining water out. For the Vac you do need to do the salad spinner/thermometer business, but fill, empty and fill again is the order of the day.

But personally I would not use such a saturated ink in either pen, but just be aware that they could clog. If you do really want to use it, be prepared to do a lot of cleaning and flushing

Just my .02 worth.

I tried Private Reserve in my "51" slender for a day - along with the advice here to avoid it, I had another problem. The pen writes wet, so the PR ink would be quite dense on the page. I could smear it half an hour after writing with a finger.

So... I cleaned it out, which took forever, and switched to Pelikan blue/black. MUCH better. This is not a dense ink, but it seems dense with this pen.

I have a simple rule, Vintage Pen: Vintage Style Ink wink.gif

So basically any ink sold by a pen maker with the exception of Diamine, but avoid their Registrars Ink ! blink.gif

I have been using Noodles's Black in my 51's, Vac and Aeromatic, without problems. All of my vintage flex nibs have seen Noodler's inks without a problem although Noodler's Brown is a bit slow to dry.

Maybe I'm not too picky on ink.

Ron,

I think that this is also a little bit about use. If you use the pen frequently and give it a good flush every once in a while, I am sure that you can get away with it. But leave it unused for a time and maybe you get trouble.

Both Richard Binder and Rick Propas are against it so that is good enough for me.

But there again it is your pen so do as you feel and if it floats you boat who am I to say no? biggrin.gif

I use PR in my two aero "51"s - I've not had problems but they are in my regular rotation and they both get a fairly regular flushing (easy to do with the aeros). My recently acquired "51" vac, however, is filled with Jim's magical Quink Washable Blue, which has become something of a standard for me with my vintage pens, along with Waterman ink.

Hi thanks everyone for your advice, I think for the time being I put the Private Reserve in a newer pen. But regarding the vintage pens, does any one have any advice as to which manufactures make more interesting colors for my old pens, I get soooo tired of just black, blue and blue black. Has any one tried the Pelikan 4001 in brown? thanks
