I started seriously collecting Parker VP s around a year ago. They are prone to cracks in the plastic barrels - especially where they screw onto the section. Three (3) of my Sixteen (16) pens have that problem and once they crack the crack will get worse. Avoid any pressure to the barrel even when screwed on the section.

Another problem can be the filling unit. Some recommend not to remove the filling unit to avoid the slim tube breaking. The best way to fill the pen well is to remove the filling mechanism and insert the plastic end of the filling mechanism directly in the ink. However to be safe it might be best not to remove it - without the filling unit (if it breaks) there is no way to use the pen and new filling units are not available anywhere. If you do want to remove the filling unit make sure all dried ink is gone (by rinsing very well) and be very careful to work it out - the more I think about it better just leave it in the pen.

One great thing about the pen is that it is easy to change the nib as the nib/feed units are easily unscrewed and replaced with another. There are a large number of different nibs listed on the following Parker 75 site charts

www.parker75.addr.com/Reference/Parker75_Ref.htm

- like broad, medium, fine, needle, executive broad, stub, right oblique, left oblique, etc.
When they came out in the 60's the nibs came in blister paks for $3 each. There may be some old jewerly stores or pharmacies that still have some stuck away. I found 8 of them once (late 1980's) in a West Virginia store for $3 each. They were mostly unusual nibs but I very much enjoy them. Funny but I had those 8 nibs years before I ever owned a VP. I bought one of my first VPs in an old Jewelry store in Honolulu, Hawaii that had one (New Old Stock) still left in the store.

Now how the pen writes - well that varies a lot from pen to pen - some write very well with the medium or fine nibs. Some tend to not write so well and are difficult to keep going - like the ink does not flow well to the nibs. My favorite nib is the left oblique (I am right handed) which gives you a calligraphy effect.

WOW thanks dd6847 for the info.Once I will get it I will have to take the insert out just to see how it is.
I am not planing to use it allot maybe just once or twice to get the feel of the pen and then its going to be stored in my pen cabinet with the rest of my beauties.
