I'm looking for one that I can use for a life time. My preference varies, but I do want the pages to be of high quality. The maximum cost is 500 USD. Any recommendations?

These are some of the best I have experienced so far. Good quality.

You might consider Oberon. They are nice thick leather and have some great designs. They are covers, which means after you use the supplied diary inside and the you can replace them with something of your chosing.

Another refillable option I enjoy are Raika. The covers are nice leather and the paper of their jounals is good. But the refills you have to pretty much get from Raika to fit properly,(at least I haven't found a good alternative in a limited search).

The web sites will show their products. Barnes & Noble used to carry some Oberon. I bought the Raika from a local shop and do not know where to find them on the internet.

Perhaps these will give you a couple more choices to make it more difficult.
