Hey,
I was just wondering what are the characteristics of a FP loving paper..I mean..if we are not buying the Clairefontainnes and other such brands and we happen to come across some good quality paper..how do we know that it will be FP loving or compatible..??.. I was looking at some sheets frm Levenger (pardon my spelling if its wrong)..does anyone have any experience of buying any for their fountain pens..??..I use a Waterman Phileas with a fine nib.

Thanks

It's not always easy to tell. I would describe it as "smooth surface but not glossy".

“Smooth, but not glossy”, I agree. It should have some texture (a natural texture, not an artificial “linen” texture or something like that, though I kind of like “hammered” paper), and should neither absorb the ink too fast nor too slowly.
Its weight should be at least 90g/m2, preferably more.

Well, that’s what I think! rolleyes.gif

FP loving paper allows your pen to glide while you write without the ink feathering or bleeding through.

I'm a big fan of onion skin and Black n' Red papers.

see above re: Levenger discussion. They used to have excellent paper for FPs. Apparently they no longer do. sad.gif

Smooth but uncoated seems important. But I find it very very hard to tell how a paper will do until I actually test it.

There are some really great discussions in this forum and the review forum, so I suggest you do a bit of poking around. Clairefontaine is pretty great, though.

I'm a big fan of onion skin.

I was wondering where one might find "Onion Skin" paper.

And, while I am on the subject of unusual papers, does anyone know whether Oxford India Paper was ever used for writing on, or just for printing. I love books printed on O I P.

I find onion skin paper at yard sales, thrift stores or on Ebay. Here is one online store that sell it. I have not bought from them myself but have heard from other pen enthusiasts that they are fine to do business with.
