Thanks for this reference. Every time I think I know something, I realize how little I know...I enjoyed the read and information.

I wonder what evidence they have to support the claim regarding Esterbrook:

QUOTE
By 1896 the Company saw further expansion possibilities in the United Kingdom and thereby appointed as their U.K. agents Hazell, Watson and Viney Ltd. Development of the product range continued apace and whereas steel pen nibs had been used with the traditional ink wells, making the necessary accessories rather cumbersome, 1920 saw Esterbrook introduce a Fountain pen with, of course, its own self-contained ink supply.

Ok, I know Esterbrook made pens in BCHR and RMHR prior to the 1930's, but I wonder which specific pens they are referring to, because as far as I know, Esterbrook didn't technically make any of these early pens, rather having them made for them by Conway Stewart, Wirt, and Aikin Lambert.

Interesting stuff though.

Brian, not a proof but an independent version of the same period from the unpublished history of Esterbrook by Stephen Hull:

"Hazell Watson & Viney's success, as sole agents, with the Relief nib meant that many British colonies were included in their agency, culminating in the addition of India in the early 1920s, at about the time that the first gold-nib Esterbrook fountain pens were introduced into England (from the USA?). By 1922, 12 fountain pen models were available in three styles: a slip-cap eyedropper (at 12/6 retail), a safety-screw cap eyedropper (15/-) and a lever-filler (17/6), all probably imprinted 'R Esterbrook & Co, Relief' followed by a model number. "

Do you have an Esterbrook safety-screw cap eyedropper, Mr. No-1 Esterbrook Authority? wink.gif wink.gif

PS> The pencil came today and it is a beauty. There is the common "RELIEF" and MADE IN ENGLAND imprint but not Esterbrook imprint.

Well, depending on what the definition of "safety" is, yes. I recently acquired a Relief 314 eyedropper in BCHR with a screw cap. Granted, it's a Wirt made model with vented feed, not a safety in the sense that Waterman or Moore made safeties.
