Hi all,

I know this is just the slightest bit off topic, but can anyone point me to a reputable online store that has brass seals, the kind you use on wax? I'm looking for Ye Olde Englishe Scripte. smile.gif Specifically, the letters S and T.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Scott

I'd suggest doing a google. Flaxart and Houghton Mifflin do nice seals.

Just as a suprise for Ray here's a little package I sealed up tight to go to England this week!

Thanks FLZapped; I had seen the conversation, which was what got me started looking. biggrin.gif

I had checked out the sites, but had just wondered if there were any other 'good shops' that I hadn't heard about.

Tytyvyllus, incredible work! I am guessing you got that great two-toned look by inking the seal before impressing? Fabulous!

Thank you both for the help, it is certainly appreciated.

I couldn't quite find the "H" I was looking for, so I just designed an H and carved myself one out of stone.. If you have time, you could do it, too! lol

Actually the 2 tone using a preinked seal would give the opposite of what you see, a colored background with the wax color for the raised sections. What I did was to hand color the high points with a gold ink. Rather time consuming but I think it looks pretty nice.

Thanks Hana,

I'll just look for that mallet and chisel, they must be around here somewhere! biggrin.gif

What did you use to carve stone? What kind of stone? Do you have a pic?

Thanks again,
Scott

It looks VERY nice. cool.gif

So that means if I used gold wax and preinked the seal with, say, red I could get something like that? Probably not as nice as you've done it, but arthritis and fine detail work don't often go hand in hand! blink.gif

Again, very nice work. I hope mine look half as nice.

That piece that Kurt made for me is part of my wife's borthday present. Inside is a hand decorated Moleskine notebook. Kurt has decorated and wrapped one for me before, so I know it's going to be stunning, but with it all prewrapped, I'll have no idea what it looks like until my wife opens it up on her birthday. I think that makes it a present for both of us.

I don't have a photo of it, but I think the stone is called "soap stone".. It came with the Chinese calligraphy set I got for Christmas last year, and.. I carved it with anything sharp I could get my hands on: sewing needle, razor blade, etc. I know, it sounds rather crude, but it worked! lol I'll try to post a picture up soon.

Does FPN issue a program? blink.gif

Ok, so Tytyvyllus is Kurt, and he does masterful work on notebooks as well as seals.

Hana works with stone and is good with razor blades.

Yup, I really need a program. Can't follow FPN without a program! tongue.gif

Thanks all, I really appreciate the help,

I didn't intend to be confusing but I have used tytyvyllus as my username ever since I had AOL so it's been me for about 14 years now. I've kept it through 6 pen sites and I think more people know me by that than my real name.

I also do calligraphy, ink & brush painting, collages, assemblages, poetry, avatars and the occasional short story. I have carved two seals but they weren't up to par. So I am waiting to pick one up in Philly to add to my collection of 4 others that were done in mainland China and Hong Kong.

As I'm an engineer in real life I need to have a creative outlet somewhere laugh.gif

I'm not too good with the razor.. I cut myself when I was carving my quill pen.

Anyway, what type of wax are you using?

-Hana (I sign this at the end so people won't have to look it up in the program.lol)

Ward Dunham and Linnea Lundquist (the proprietors of Atelier Gargoyle) have been collecting antique seals, commissioning new seal engravings, and designing new seals themselves for several decades. Ward, a Master Calligrapher specializing in Gothic Hands, has long been interested in Heraldry.

You might check out ateliergargoyle

I attended a seminar Ward gave at the DC penshow. Shared some wonderful examples of how he approaches a blank sheet of paper and demonstrated how easy it is blush.gif Well for him.

The website is under construction but seals and wax are discussed. No connecton here - just enjoyed meeting Ward at the penshow.

Here's a shot of how my seal looks. It's about the size of a dime. (The red is from left over residue of stamp pad)

Edit: Better picture.

Check out www.customwaxnseals.com. They appear to have a large selection. They also do custom seals.

Hana, I don't think I could do that well carving out of stone!

I have checked out the seal sites mentioned and scads of others: I never realized there were that many options out there. biggrin.gif

Tytyvyllus, you should really develop some more hobbies or skills, be creative! rolleyes.gif If you ever need a new screename, might I suggest 'MacGyver'?

I'm waiting on a response from letterseals, who seem to be on a holiday at the moment. (Go to their site and read the TEENY red writing) blink.gif

Thanks to everyone, I'm enjoying learning so much!
