Full Version: I'm beginning to feel the pull of the 51

Well I've been accumulating pens for about ten years. In that time I have come across a bunch of Parker 51's. Although they never did much for me I always bought them if they were $5 or $10. I usually sold off the vacumatic fillers because they are too complicated for me to repair myself, and the rest just collected dust in a cigar box.

Wow, I just inked one up and took it on a three day trip, what a nice pen. It feels good in my hand. I might have a new item in my rotation!

Here is a snapshot of my meager collection.

Nice. I'll give you $10 for the silver one?????? and $10 for the gold one??

Great finds for no more than $10!

I have around 200 vintage pens but one thing which has always been consistant - a parker 51 is always in my rotation.

Very nice collection, Paul! I don't have a signet or a flighter, so I'm jealous.

Very nice. With my luck my wife would ink them up and that would be the last I'd see of them. She used to be a Sheaffer girl but she now leans towards Parkers.

Well I've been trolling flea markets every sunday morning for ten or twelve years. That's just one per year. If you factor in the gas money I spent it changes the equation. But that's no fun!

Oh come on you cheapskate. The guy deserves to turn a profit, after all he did track the things down, and probably even restored some of them.

I'll give you $20 each for the sivler and gold ones - a nice fat profit! wink.gif

Nice collection Paul!

Ok, how about $40 for each and a certificate of my appreciation rolleyes.gif
PaulLeMay
As tempting as the certificate of appreciation is, I think I'll hang on to these 51's. I might even start picking off auctions on Flea-Bay!

Paul-

Parker vacumatic fillers are not at all difficult to repair.
If a putz like me can replace a diaphragm in a few minutes anybody can.
Then you can get in the Vacumatic Cool Kid Club. cool.gif
(The $40 wrench is not an absolute necessity for a hobbist- A 5/16" nut with 32 tpi and a slit cut in it is all you need)

Anyway- the "51" (if you really want to have the name right, use the quotes)has a pen/paper/hand/brain mojo that is, um ... compelling.

Meager collection? I considered my collection of 51's meager, but now compared to yours I don't know what to call it!
Parker 51's are always in my rotation. Glad you rediscovered the joy of the "51"

Hope your life insurance is up to date, that could enrage a certain Navy Seal who frequents these parts :bunny1: :bunny1: lticaptd.gif lticaptd.gif

Look people I want you to know that I was wrong and misguided all along, Parker "51"s are no good at all, just leave them alone and let the twisted people like Old Griz, Richard B, Some Irish Bloke, his Aussie Sidekick and myself to their little fetish. You just go off and aquire something else like Heros and the like. :bunny1: :bunny1:

If you get one that writes well that is a fluke, sell it quickly for about $10 before it all goes wrong and is worthless. Also Do Not go for the Silver Cap ones, they make your hands go black and ruin your clothes.

Ask Old Griz, MT Labs have done significant research on this and have found that most "51"s in the wild are in fact an environmental hazard and you should not store them unless you have the correct facilities. At great Risk to personal health and fortune, we are prepared to take on the task of storing these pens in a safe way for the benefit of all mankind. PM me for details of where to send them. You all wondered about the experiment at MT labs with the "51"s and now you know  The Babbage has been working day and night on the problem, just to get an answer.

Jim

PS I you have a Black Vac DJ with a stub nib and a mint Empire cap, then that is an extreme Bio Hazard and you should take steps to FedEx it to me immediately. I have the proper facilities to handle and store it. cool.gif

The blind cap threads on the filler are 36 tpi. Use of a 32 tpi fitting can damage the filler.

Jim is absolutely right about the environmental hazards of Parker "51" pens, especially the double jewel and silver capped versions... in fact it has just been announced by The Farm Environmental Protection Agency (the US subsidiary of MT) that shipment of these items out of the US is no longer permitted.
All materials of this sort must be shipped to the certified TFEPA facility in Maryland, where a specially trained ex Navy SEAL will take care of the problem.
For further information on shipping these dangerous materials please contact me back channel...

It's all true folks.

Through our research we discovered (from his Uncle Bert) that Frank D. was only joking when he wrote "Da Book".

We at Murphy Towers have developed an environmental way of disposing of these monstrosities in an environmentally friendly fashion. (freudian slip) *

I just checked my old records. I actually paid $60 for the Gold Filled pen/pencil set. I must have had a lot of cash on me that day!
