I am no Vacumatic expert, but take a look at the filler on this pen...
Shouldn't the threads for the filler be able to be accessed when the blind cap is removed... the blind cap on this pen has male threads. How do you get to the filler to replace the diaphram....

HI! - the top part of the speedline filler came off with your blind cap. The filler can now be removed unless the diaphragm has ossified and it is stuck.

Good luck:

Hi Griz,

Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't there be a button type end to the shaft and so the blind cap, if it still has the threaded insert in it, shouldn't have been able to pull off over it?

All of the five vacs that I have certainly do.

The shaft on the one in the picture doesn't look right somehow and doesn't look like any that I have seen on a vac, not that my knowledge is anything like exhaustive or even terribly extensive.

Has somebody been doing a bit of re-engineering or has the butt come out through the seat of the pants and left the diaphragm exposed, so to speak? biggrin.gif

I look forward to the experts replies with interest

Cheers John

This is not my pen... I saw it on eBay and was pretty sure something was not right.

It looks as though the screw collar of the filling unit has stuck itself to the threads inside the blind cap. The picture is unclear, but if the blind cap has some male threads protruding from it, that's the screw collar. Try soaking it and it should unscrew. Remove it, then slide it back over the plunger and the same threads should fit in the barrel.

Oxonian, I think that's an early aluminium speedline filler.

According to DavidI at Vacumania the button seems to have disappeared in the second generation Vacs...
That is what I am seeing in the pictures on his essay on Vacs.
The first generations of vacs had lock down fillers... apparently the second generation did not... then the third generation went to the plastic filler.

Exactly right. You can see the blind cap nipple stuck in the blind cap. This is what happens when you don't install the filler right! This is a speedline unit. The brass button on the end is the same diameter as the blind cap nipple, so it's possible to slide the nipple off of the filler.

Use rubber to protect the threads when you unscrew it from the blind cap.

This is a DJ vacumatic, so IIRC, it's more likely to have a speedline filler. There is a transition period there too ya know!

Hello.

As the other issues have already been treate, I only add that I think that the jewels colors are not right. If I am right they should match the barrel pattern. This seems to be a mongrel, someone put together for sale. Nevertheless, mongrels can be favorites.

cheers

No, for the later speedline units with the long blind cap, a black jewel is correct.
