I just won 2 Esterbrooks on Ebay. These are my first 2 Esties. The auction says the the Red is larger than the Green. The Green has a 9314 M nib, and I can't read the numbers on the Red, looks like *55*. I will know better once I receive them.

I was wondering the models of the 2. Any help will be appreciated.

BTW, I paid $16 for both. Is that a fair price?

The price is right. I think I see a 4 after the 55. That would narrow it to the 1554 'Firm Fine' nib. The 9314-M is a "Medium Relief Stub', not an easy nib to locate. That nib alone will usually cost more than your pen purchase price.

I almost bid on those!

I think the other one was a 1555, at least thats what I figured it was.

You got a good price if the pens need to be resacced. If the pens don't need to be resacced, you got a fabulous price.

If the pens are of the same diameter, and one is longer than the other then they are the LJ model (longer) or the SJ model (shorter). The plain J is a larger diameter than the LJ but the same length.

I'd say you got a very nice deal for the two. Congratulations, you will really enjoy them... the stub nib is a nice extra.

The green pen is an SJ. In the photo, the red one looks like it's the same diameter, which would make it an LJ.

I received the pens today. The green is a SJ and the Red is a J. Both are in great shape. I have already re-sacked the Green SJ and love the Stub nib (9314 M). The nib (1554), and section on the Red J are soaking as they are not coming apart. The feed is also clogged, as I cannot get any water to flush through using a ear syringe. I will let it soak overnight as see if it is easier then. Any tricks on removing the nib?

$16 is a terrible price. Box those up and ship to.... biggrin.gif

The price alone is less than you'd pay for that relief nib.

If the nib is stuck, and a long soak in luke warm water doesn't do it, either use a hair dryer or heat gun (on a low setting) pointed at the inside of the section, or, dip it quickly in some hot water. Now, I know, some people are going to think you're going to run into a problem with the hard rubber section and hot water, but I'm talking about a real quick 3-5 second dip, just to dissolve some of the caked on ink in the threads. Then it should come out easily.

For added grip, I use a section of old bicycle inner tube and wrap it around the nib while twisting.

Good luck!

I got the nib out, re-sacked the pen and tried it out. The 1554 nib is VERY scratchy, and very hard to get the ink to flow. I think I will be looking for a replacement. I prefer a more medium nib, and this fine is just not doing it.

Where is a good place to find replacements? and what would you suggest for a nice medium nib?

Thanks

The 2668/9668 are generally considered standard medium nibs. Richard Binder has some for sale on his web site. You can also often find them on eBay, but asking prices are often a little on the ridiculous side.

Both Richard Binder's and Brian Anderson's sites have nib charts that tell you what the numbers represent.

Hope that helps,

Don

Thanks, I just ordered a 9668 from Richard.
