forgive horrid spelling if there is any.
I have an 8-pen case that I bought from Pendemonium. It's a great little case but I have noticed that some of my daily users are starting to get small scratches from coming into contact with the pens on the other side of the case. Originally I'd not planned to keep 8 pens in it. Of course, originally I believed I could live with only 2 pens back in 1998.
I have temporarily slipped a scrap of satin in between the pens but it isnt' very substantial. What's the safest material to put in there. None of the pens are HR (darn it!) - acrylic, celluloid and laquer on metal (VPs).
thanks much.

If there will be pens with silver in here, then avoid rubber, or anything with elastic. Rubber generally has some sulphur in it, which will tarnish your silver very quickly.

KCat,
Wonder how that cushy shelf liner stuff would be? They sell it at Wal-Mart. I have an unused scrap [white] I'd be glad to mail to you if you want to try it. What size would it need to be? I don't think it is a rubber product.

How about felt? That's what they line boxes and trays with, after all.

I've got a microfiber cloth for my eyeglasses and I could see using it to line a pen case so you would be cleaning them as well.
Only some types of elastic contain natural or synthetic rubber that contains sulfur as part of the vulcanization process. A bigger culprit is the metallic salts used to dye the leather in cases for oxidation of silver. As well just normal air and heat will form an oxide layer on silver. Now if you have smog well that will be worse

well, no silver to worry about but that's still good information to have.
If felt is safe (i guess I wondered about the dyes) then that would be preferable.
Judybug, good thought - nice and cushy. I have quite a bit myself because I find it works for all kinds of things around the house.

I've used polyester fleece for similar purposes. It's cheap, cushiony and soft. Also, it doesn't fray.

That's why I don't use pen cases but pen wraps for pens who make it out of the house.
Most of my pens stay in their nice pen boxes in a drawer.

I would use white (thus undyed) felt, but any felt would probably be a good choice. If you happen to have a source for wool felt vs. synthetic, it might be a tiny bit softer.
I have a felt pen wrap from pendemonium and it works extremely well, and I've never seen any scratching at all. (No protection against mashing, but they're not subject to a lot of mashing potential in my handbag.)
