Kaweco is a very underrated company in my opinion. They have been making sturdy, functional pens that "just work" since at least the 30s.

Thanks for bringing attention to this nice little pen. In the past couple of years I've given away at least a dozen of these in my attempts to introduce people to the joy of using fountain pens ("the first one's free, little girl"

). The pens are foolproof, write first time every time, and you can stick one in the pocket of your jeans and not worry about it. Great little knock-around pens.
As well as the metallic plastic shown in the review, there are plainer ones, which came with a choice of F and M nibs.

I like the idea of using them as "lures".

I'm tempted to look for one with a F nib if it's a wet writer. I like small light pens as knockabouts. Great review.

My wife bought one at the pen show. It is in a translucent red color and she paid, yes, 10.00. She loves that pen too. I have used it a few times and it is a smooooooooth writer. Great review on a nice little pen!!

Great review!
I might have to look at getting a few of these as they seem pretty ideal for a multitude of purposes.

Hey Leslie -
I happen to have one in "red ice" wiht a Med niib (although it writes sort of in between M//F) I haven't used it much since I got my Pelikano Jr (which is large enough for my hand). Be happy to work out a deal. PM me
These sports are really nice pens IMO, but small for me. I tried to lure a PT newbie with mine a while back, but deal was never consumated.

I just got my Kaweco Sport yesterday in the mail; I bought it off of Pentrace's Green Board for $8. My experience resembles everyone else's: this pen is a nice, consistent writer. Mine isn't butter smooth; it has a very slight tooth, but it is a consistent tooth, so it provides feedback instead of endless frustration. I think that mine will permanently take up residence in my front pocket; I'm now trying to decide if I will still carry another pen on my undershirt's collar like I used to...
A word of warning on the ED conversion. I have a clear barrel on my Kaweco, and I can see a piece of metal on the back end of the barrel--presumably to give the pen better balance. I'm not familiar with ED conversions, but I do recall Viv saying that pens with metal in the body and in constant contact with ink are generally not very good candidates to turn into eyedroppers because the metal will corrode over time.
EDIT: Strange, but I just looked on the Swisher pages, and the pictures of the Kaweco Sport "Ice" (which is what I have) don't have that metal weight in the back of the pen. Is my pen simply an anomaly? Perhaps the person who sold it to me did a bit of modification?

Roy...
I'd make sure the seal was good by using a little pure silicone grease, soft resin, or plumber's wax.
Without this addition I would not trust the pen to stay sealed.
Gerry's suggestion of using plumber's wax is a great idea and the pens I have used it on are working fabulously.

Nice review, Roy--thanks!

I have two Kaweco Sport models--a metallic red rollerball and a black plastic ballpoint (!) but no fountain pen. The only Kaweco fountain pen I own is the one my Mom gave me a couple of years ago--it's a Kaweco 'Dia' 802G piston-filler from the 1950's/1960's....It's a great pen and I agree with John about Kaweco being a somewhat underrated brand...

Hi Roy,
Thanks for the great review! Interesting pen, that one should be able to come by fairly easily over here. A good alternative for the Waterman I am using currently in my missionary drives...
I will have a look next week or so...
Kind regards,

You're giving away Waterman pens? No wonder they call you "mad"!

Hey! They called me mad well before I got back into fountain pens. I earned my nick about 11 years ago while working and living in the UK, because of my uncontrollable, unstoppable, tear-drenching, belly-aching, raucous, loud, work-stopping (everybody's

) and hysterical laughter

Hi,
That metal weight will come out of the pen if you drop the barrel several times lip-side-down.

Swisherpens lists a "MONTEVERDE FOUNTAIN PEN CONVERTER" that seems to be a fit for any pen that works with international size cartridges:
Click for picutre of converterBy the way, that site lists both metal and plastic versions of the pen, with the plastic costing something like $4 more. Has anyone written with both? I am thinking about getting a plstic one for my son who will turn 3 in about a month

No need for banging to remove the metal thingy.
Just heat the barrel with a heat gun (heair dryer

) and it will drop down thanks to ... differential thermal expansion...
The pen feels substantially unbalanced without it (to me at least).

The "metal" version is Metallic colored as in metallic painted plastic. That is the version I went with to save some money. In a few weeks the metallic paint wears off exposing the true color of black plastic beneath. No wonder they are on clearance, and have been for a few months.

Hi,
If you have problems, I can help you. Just check to make sure there is no metal weight in the barrel. If it is there, I can remove it for you. (Non-destructively).

Reviving an old thread but I don't think anyone has mentioned the
Manufactum Kaweco Sport. I believe that this particular finish has been specially reproduced for Manufactum, the mail order company. I think they're prettier than the normal Kaweco Sports available and might get one myself now I've read your good reviews.
