Had nice evening by Ron Zorn. One of the pens he took a "second" stab at was an otherwise gem of a double jewel 51 that seemed to have had its clutch ring chewed up by a losing encounter with pliers. I wanted the bad ring off; spare clutch rings are obtainable parts and indeed we had some.

The ring wouldn't budge. Several go rounds of heat, soaking, application of not inconsiderable force, but still the thing would not move.

Ron asked if i was willing to risk trashing the barrel. Well, yeah, i had donors in this color, but would prefer to save the assembly if we could.

He put the thing on his mini lathe and proceeded to carve the bad metal clutch ring (seemingly glued on) away from the plastic barrel assembly doing no harm to that more fragile part. Very cool by me, but whaddoEyeknow? After cleaning up the plastic, we popped on a new ring and the gem was ready to go.

I am in total awe of these guys with their mini-tools, most of my engineering experience is of the Light Engineering variety, moving towards to heavy cool.gif

Sockets are of the 1/2" drive variety or bigger, grinders are bench mounted and sources of heat are based around Bullfinch propane gas torches. Gentle means using the 2 pound instead of the 5 pound hammer blink.gif

Nice one,

Jim
