Can anybody shed some light on exactly what the connections are between the manufacturer of vintage Conway Stewart pens and the modern pen manufacturer.

Effectively nothing, as far as I know!
The original CS company ceased trading and was wound up in the mid 1970s. Don Yendle obtained the rights to use the CS trademark in the late 1990s and set up the modern company which started to produce a range of really nice pens in the traditional styles (58 and Dinkie) and materials (casein) - see my comments in the nearby thread on modern Conway Stewarts!
This may be an over simplification, no doubt others will add in the details I may have glossed over!
