Full Version: From Vanishing Point to Balance..

I started out meaning to buy a Deep Yellow Pilot Vanishing Point (and probably will sometime)... and just bought a gorgeous recently restored 1930's Marine Green Sheaffer Balance instead.

You couldn't really mistake one for the other, could you?

I just want to thank people on the forum for all the information and enthusiasm that has been gathered here.

I also just picked up (both of them on ebay) a very nice Estie that went for a low price because of a faded colour that I actually prefer...

Next I want to pick up a Parker 51 or Hero 100 for my girlfriend (so the pen has to have a gold cap - she's a redhead and says silver anything makes look too pale - oh and she wants a medium nib, which would mean the Hero would need tweaking)... then I'm thinking of either coming back for that VP, or possibly even more likely, a Sailor 1911 or Sapporo. And I'd love to have a Murex, but not nearly as much as a Nakaya Urushi...

Were you to buy, hypothetically, a yellow vanishing point, where would you look?

Stephen -

Ebay usually has yellow VPs on offer - they're a Japanese only model and possibly come with a nib with less or no gold than normal. I think, but wasn't able to confirm due a seller's (Ujuki) incomprehension of English (so why did he encourage questions?) that the pen can take the usual interchangeable nibs.

hi,

the model meanwhile is refering to is the decimo. i purchased one from ujuku the japanese seller on e bay--altho i purchased the pen from his web site. it is wonderfully comfortable pen and thinner than the current vp available in the u.s. the seller is honest and the transaction went very well.

that said, the decimo colors are rather muted. the yellow available in the decimo line is a mustard--not a brite yellow.

the decimo uses the same nib assembly as the vps currently available in the us.

There is a mustard yellow Gen II VP available also.
It has a gold nib.

I won one in auction from a Seller in Japan.
He was very trustworthy, in fact he sent me 2 VPs when I only won 1!!!!
(Yes, I sent the second one back.)
I'll post a picture later.

hi,

Actully I thought there was a third VP that looked like the original design and was slightly slimmer that the second generation.

If I remember correctly, there was a short discussion of these 3 series here a little while back.

Not quite.

There is a "Hervest" (Harvest?) Yellow Decimo FCT-15SR on Ujuku's website, but I was referring to the Deep Yellow VP FCN-1MR - which seems to have "standard" VP dimensions. One of these is reviewed on this site.

Ujuku's shop is at http://ujuku.jpn.ph/KAIMONO/penframe.htm - he's probably an awfully nice guy, but his English is appalling. I asked him if a medium VP was the same width as a medium Varsity/V-Pen disposeable (which he also sells) and he wrote back saying the two pens were a different price and the VP was worth the extra... His English is still much better than my Japanese..

See http://ujuku.jpn.ph/KAIMONO/penframe.htm

When he sent me the "extra" VP I wrote him telling him that I had received a second pen.

I asked him what he wanted me to do?

He replied "You send. I pay."

Can't get any clearer than that.

He did pay the return postage and very promptly.

I still don't think being able to answer a simple question is useful in a seller - especially if he invites them - but ethics are much more important, and I've seen nothing but good about Ujuku. I think though that I'd back any questions I had to ask him with independent research - asking questions here or elsewhere.

But in this case - what else is the man going to do? Say that you have to pay to correct his mistake, while you're holding on to his pen??

"Pen Seller From France" on ebay once sent me a second pen after I mailed him a first that had disappeared in the post. Then both arrived at the same time. I offered to buy the first at a very slight discount or send it back at his expense - and instead he sold me the pen (a Rotring Newton pencil that has almost as a higher RRP as a VP does in Japan) at a BIGGER discount than I'd asked for - now that's really pushing the boat out!

FYI, link to Pilot's Web page showing a picture of the yellow "Capless": http://www.pilot.co.jp/products/pen/founta...less/index.html (scroll to bottom). List price, before tax, is 10,000 Yen.

Link to Pilot's Web page showing a picture of the yellow "Capless decimo": http://www.pilot.co.jp/products/pen/founta...cimo/index.html (scroll to middle). List price, before tax, is 15,000 Yen.

hi,

on pentrace richard binder posted that the nibs on the capless vp and the decimo are not interchangeable. if you buy one of richard's specialized nibs, you have to tell him which pen you have so he can make the adjustments.

Thanks, meanwhile, for the link to the Japan Ujuku Shop. I placed an order for the "Deep Yellow" pen (model FCN-1MR). This pen is a décimo, right?

Stephen
NeoTiger
I don't think the FCN-1MR is the Decimo. If you look at his catalogue, there's another bunch of pens called FCT-15SR which are obviously thinner and weigh about 50% less.

There is a Harvest Yellow colour available for the Decimo range, which looks more like a greeny/grey yellow compared to the bright orange yellow of the Deep Yellow capless.

The Decimo version also costs more.
Stephen-I-am
So the deep yellow is just a VP color not available in the US?

Stephen
NeoTiger
I think so, I think the "Deep Yellow" Vanishing Point is just the same as the "Mustard Yellow" Vanishing Point that has been reviewed here on FPN.

No, this pen ISN'T a Decimo! The Decimo's are the thin pens like the "Hervest Yellow" - see how much thinner the Hervest looks in the picture on Ujuku's store?
Stephen-I-am
Thanks for the clarification.

Now to email Richard to tell him nevermind ....
