The pen itself is the standard Optima in terms of size and weight. This makes it one of the more usable of modern production pens, as when closed it's a compact pen. Post the cap for writing, however, and you have a pen that's long enough to balance nicely in the hand.
I love the Optima for this fact. There's not a shirt pocket in my closet that the Optima won't fit into easily. At the same time, unlike many "compact" pens, it's very comfortable when in use.
I share this appreciation for the form of the Optima. As a person who mainly carries pens in shirt pockets, I enjoy relatively shorter pens that are well-balanced posted and have some girth. 5" capped is just about perfect IMO. What are some more pens that fit this bill?

The Duke 2007 (aka "Mini Torpedo") fits that description perfectly.

A Sailor Professional Gear fits your bill very well. Short, thick barrel, relatively large cap, big 21k nib, needs to be posted and then feels comfortable and well balanced. A very reliable c/c filler with the finer Japanese nib widths, available in black resin with either palladium or gold trim. Best prices at www.pengallery.com /:)

Vintage: I like the Sheaffer Tuckaways for a short fat pen. Modern: I like the Duke mini-torpedo too.

Also vintage: Duofold Junior, especially the flat-top. Short, but fatter than your average pen (though not as fat as a Big Red). *Excellent* practical pens, and a relatively inexpensive way into the family of a great classic.
The Lady Duofolds are significantly thinner, and IIRC the streamline Juniors don't have the same chubbiness.

Monteverde Sonata. 11 cm capped, or 4 5/8 inches old style.
smooth German nib, medium. C/C fill. Cap posts beautifully, a necessity on small pens. A go-to pen for a lot of writing.

Not too long ago I had a BHR Conklin Duragraph. I think they were only made for one or two years. OS in diameter, but really short with a HUGE nib.
