The Man
Hi, folks. I think I'm kinda' doing this backward, having done two or three posts already. I'll (try to smile.gif ) keep this narrative short and sweet, everyone's busy and all.

I have a strong writing background (I do so corporately and for myself). Not too long ago, I figured I needed something less bulky (than a laptop), more iconic, more suggestive of what I do and love . . . and quickly came to the conclusion that I need a good, if not great (which I, in my heart, truly believe my current main pen to be [see below]) pen. You know, how like Jedis carry lightsabers.

But, a well-made, competent-material'd pen is more than that, as most of you know and agree. A functional tool whose aesthetics haven't been marred by revisionary doctrines.

I'm a die-hard Cross aficionado and I'm trying to learn more about the company and its history. I used to carry a basalt black, and then the platinum-plated Cross Townsend. Now, I carry a Cross Apogee as my main pen (going back to the "icon" yarn, in the 007 movie, Tomorrow Never Dies, Bond sees the new Walther and tells Wai Lin, "Ah, the new Walther. I asked Q to get me one of those." That's how I felt when I replaced my Townsend for the Apogee; what a cool name, for the latter, by the way. Whoops; didn't mean to mix movie metaphors here.). It's not that I don't like other brands, it's just that the Cross feels right (write? laugh.gif ) in my hand.

I'm really glad the Apogee came along. Engraved chrome version, to be exact. The Apogee writes very well for me and, while I'll still be collecting pens and trying to learn more about them, I can't see replacing this Engraved chrome number any time soon. It is the pen I carry every day, the pen I treat well, the pen that I show off, indeed, THE pen for me. I hope you have one, as well.

And, I wish all of you happy writing. See you more on the boards and thanks for reading.

Welcome! Sounds as if you're going to have to do a review, complete with pics, of the pen tongue.gif.

Heh. Thanks, all!

I'd do an Apogee review right now . . . though, I haven't taken any pics of my Apogee yet.

I think the existing review, in the Cross section, is pretty much on the point (pardon the pun).

Great to have another Cross fan; particularly one with a Townsend and Apogee.

Thinking about that Barleycorn Apogee for myself sometime.. or the Black laquer..oh the choices!

Hello and welcome aboard the FPN. Very sadly, I believe that Cross is the last pen still manufactured in the USA? Nonetheless, enjoy the forums and make yourself at home on here. biggrin.gif

Welcome to The Man. You should like this forum where the members are inciteful, tolerant, occasionally nutty, but generally well-behaved.

Manennhitsu, don't forget Bexley is made in the USA, too.

Welcome to the forum, and on a different not referencing the quote.

I thought the nib, feed, celluloid, converter (when used), and metal furnishings came from over seas. I thought "designed/assembled" in the USA was closer to the truth.

Ah thank you! I forgot about them!

Yikes . . . I actually don't know that reference. But, I'll laugh along anyway, hahahah roflmho.gif (I hope it's meant to be funny).

Thanks for the welcome, all the same, Onion, and Mannenhitsu, Bill, and RLTodd. And thanks to you all for making this such an ADDICTING board, heh.

That's gotta be a reference to Chico and the man.... right Onion?

Welcome to the board Man. With the conviction you have you might as well trundle down to the Cross Forum and ignore the rest of us <_<

Looking forward to your posts (I have a couple of Cross pens, amongst all my Esterbrooks)...

Regards,

Gerry

No, no, can't think of ignoring all you fine people on this board, Gerry. I'm the one "not worthy, not worthy," heh tongue.gif .

Yikes, OK, so, I did a "Chico and the man" search and . . . I see, 1970s sitcom. THAT would make sense why I didn't get the reference -- I got a pretty good cable package now, but, back in the 70s, where I live, there was no cable available yet and, man, with the picture and sound reception we got, it was probably better to toss the rabbit ears in the round file (which . . . I think we actually ended up doing).

Ended up doing a lot reading, got a whole lotta studying done . . . and writing, and, whoa, come to think of it, maybe that's why I developed an appreciation for the pen. Man, the things that come to you later in life, heh.

Thanks again!

Probably so. It's well known that the nibs are German, the celluloid Italian. Can't speak for the rest of the parts, but I like the product.

I don't know much about Cross construction. Are they manufactured completely in the US?
