Hi All,

I have some Sheaffer snorkel caps that could use dent repairs. In particular the gold fill Crest model and the stainless Sentinel caps. Do the inner caps come out? Do I need a cap puller if so?

In addition I have an Autograph snorkel with the plastic cap and the big GF band. The pen is fully restored and looks great, EXCEPT that somehow the gold band got a number of dents in it. Can these be fixed? If so, it would be a treasure since the band has no writing on it....

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I have a Crest that has the same problem and if there is an answer to how to remove this inner cap plug or whatever it is called I'd like to know how to do it. I've got the tools to fix the dent.

I've already posted a simular request a few months ago and recieved zero feedback.
Removing the blindcap looks to be a delicate operation !
Surely there are some proffesionals who can help us out ?

The inner cap and band are an inseparable assembly. The outer cap is cemented to the inner cap using an adhesive that does not appear to respond to heat. Sheaffer provided the inner cap/band unit as a spare part, and it's possible to get an old one out by destroying it. This is what I did to restore the cap on this Touchdown TM Autograph:

(I had a green Autograph cap that was in terrible condition, and I cut the outer cap off to get the inner cap/band unit to use in this cap after I had removed its damaged inner cap/band unit.)

Thank you for sharing your experience Richard. It's refreshing to see such free exchange of info for those interested in trying repairs on their own, but of course - your site illustrates your generosity better than I possibly could.

On a slightly different note, is there a little plug at the end of the cap that can be removed to access the clip spring and maybe tamp out the dents at the very end of the cap??? Just fishing for something more to do after making 10 replacement white dots! smile.gif

All the best,

Steve

Nope. The inner cap is a solid piece, probably deep-drawn from a flat sheet. The end of it is not removable. The only way to get in there, absent the ability to remove the inner cap whole, is to drill it out and then glue in a round piece of some sheet stock to close it up afterward.

Richard, once again, I am in your debt. Many thanks.

I recently purchased a brown touchdown pen on Ebay (not the TM but the thicker one). The pen was not very well packed but I'm not sure it would have survived either someone's big boot or the mail truck that ran over the package. Anyway, the plastic cap was smashed. I was able to pry out a plastic plate that was glued to the back of the cap hiding the clip spring. I was hoping the steel or gold caps had this plug also.

Thanks again,

Steve
